SpainAs many here know, Spain has selected the film that will represent them in the next Oscars. And the election has caused surprise and different types of comments. It is El Buen Patron and tells the story of the owner of a scale factory in pursuit of the regional government's award for business excellence, while everything around him seems to collapse. El Buen Patron is starring by Oscar Winner Javier Bardem and is directed by Fernando León de Aranoa who already directed a film that represented Spain at the Oscars in 2003 with Los lunes al sol. That choice caused controversy since the Spanish Film Academy preferred Los lunes al sol over Pedro Almodovar's film Talk to Her which swept awards including the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. History seems to repeat itself now when another film directed by Fernando León de Aranoa is chosen above another Almodovar film Madres Paralelas. Spain is currently the third country with the most Oscar nominations after France and Italy. Of those nominations, Spain has won four times: Volver a Empezar (1983) Belle Époque (1994) Todo Sobre mi Madre (2000) Mar Adentro (2005)

I'm worried this decision will hurt Cruz's chances in best actress.

I'm worried this decision will hurt Cruz's chances in best actress. I'm not I´m tired of nominated actress for foreign language films or musical. When will proove Penelope Cruz of doing an Oscar Worthy Performance 100% in English and without singing.- The same goes to the much superior actress Cotillard.-

I'm worried this decision will hurt Cruz's chances in best actress. I doubt it will make a difference. Despite being selected by their respective countries, neither Elle nor Two Days, One Night ended up getting nominated, and their leads still made it. La Vie en rose didn't even need to get nominated for Cotillard to win. EDIT: Cruz still made it back in '06, despite Volver not getting nominated.

Hell, Almodovar won an Oscar for a film that wasn't even Spain's selection.

Like you said Elle and Two Days, One Night were still their countries official submissions, we don't know if they had maintained buzz if they had essentially been snubbed by their home countries. Same goes for Antonio Banderas two years ago. I'll give you La Vie en Rose though, but that's also the only film that was a baity biopic. Hopefully this won't affect Cruz, who is a big enough name on her own and Almodovar is always a contender, but it also doesn't help that her film won't qualify in a category it was seemed as a lock in. Also Volver was nominated in '06 though

part of me wonders if this helps Almodovar and Cruz more if anything, since now that the film can't be nominated in IFF there might be a stronger desire to celebrate it. Not that that helped Sciamma or Portrait two years ago, but Almodovar and Cruz have cred.

Canada Canada is another of the Oscar winning countries that has selected the film that will represent them in the next Oscars. It is Drunken Birds and the story of Willy, a Mexican drug runner in a crime cartel, who travels to Canada in search of his girlfriend after she disappears, and takes a job as a migrant worker on a farm in the Montérégie region. The film stars Mexican actor Jorge Antonio Guerrero who you might remember for his performance in Mexican Oscar winner Roma. To date, Canada has achieved seven Oscar nominations, of which The Barbarian Invasions won in 2004, being the only Oscar for Canada to date.

France's Shortlist:
BAC Nord Happening Titane
I imagine they'll go with Happening, it's the safer play.

France's Shortlist: BAC Nord Happening Titane I imagine they'll go with Happening, it's the safer play. The Palme d'Or versus the Golden Lion. They're really spoiled for choice here. But yeah, I expect them to pick the Diwan. With that said, I'm predicting Ducournau to get a BAFTA nod.

IsraelAs many of you know, the winning film for Best Picture at the Ophir Award (the Oscar for Israel) automatically becomes the Israeli representative for the Oscars. With two exceptions as happened when in 2006 Aviva, My Love and Sweet Mud tied for Best Picture which forced a vote to choose which would go to the Oscar (which was Sweet Mud) and in 2007 when The Band's Visit was disqualified for contain too much English in the dialogue and Beaufort was selected to go to the Oscars (Beaufort was nominated for an Oscar which turned out to be the first Oscar nomination for Israel in 23 years) This year the winner of Best Film at the Ophir Award (and therefore the representative of Israel at the Oscars) is Let It Be Morning and it is about a Palestinian who lives in Jerusalem and who attends his brother's wedding but then He is unable to return home due to Israeli soldiers blocking the roads. It is worth mentioning that the film premiered at the last Cannes Film Festival where there was controversy when the Palestinian cast was upset because the film was only considered Isreali and not Palestinian so the cast did a boycott. Israel has achieved 10 Oscar nominations however to date it has not won any which makes it the country with the most Oscar nominations without winning any.

South KoreaSouth Korea, one of the most popular film and television industries, has chosen the movie that will go to the Oscars for them. It's Escape from Mogadishu and it's about when the Civil War started in Mogadishu, capital of Somalia, the members of the South Korean Embassy were forced to work with members of the North Korean Embassy in order to escape from Somalia. South Korea has achieved an Oscar nomination and a win to date. But it is nothing more and nothing less than Parasite that won the Oscar for Best International Film and made history by being the first film not in English to win the Oscar for Best Picture.

TaiwanAs Stabcaesar already announced, Taiwan has announced their film that will represent them at the next Oscars. This is The Falls and tells the story of a mother and her daughter whose relationship is complicated while they are in quarantine by Covid-19. The film was screened at the last Venice Film Festival and is directed by Mong-Hong Chung and it is the third time (and second year in a row) that a film directed by him has been chosen to represent Taiwan at the Oscars. The other two are Soul (2013) and last year with A Sun which made the Shortlist but was not nominated in the end. Taiwan has got three Oscar nominations but curiously all films directed by Ang Lee: The Wedding Banquet (1994) Eat Drink Man Woman (1995) and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2001) the latter winning the Oscar in addition to being nominated for Best Picture.
