We are in August and in other years we would already have some films registered to participate in the Oscar for Best International Film. But we know that we are not in normal times and the impact of Covid 19 is still in many countries. As you know every country has to choose a film as its representative. Such a decision may fall on the respective Academies of those countries, a jury or the Ministry of Culture. To compete, the film must be released in theaters between January 1, 2021 and December 31, 2021. Surely in the coming weeks you will be able to know the first films registered to participate now that you know the rules. Here is the statement from the Academy: www.oscars.org/sites/oscars/files/94aa_international_feature.pdf

SwitzerlandSwitzerland is always that I remember one of the first countries to choose the film that will represent them at the Oscars. And this time they have chosen Olga and the film is about a young gymnast who is trying to enter the Swiss team at the same time that problems are unleashed in her native Ukraine. Olga is Elie Grappe's feature film directorial debut. Switzerland has achieved five nominations to date in the Best International Feature Film / Best Foreign Language Film category. Of which Switzerland has won twice: Dangerous Moves (1985) and Journey of Hope (1991)

Serbia Serbia has just selected its representative in the next Oscars for Best International Film. It's Oasis and the plot is about Marija who arrives at an Institute for special people and becomes friends with Dragana but when they both fall in love with the same guy the problems begin. Since the dissolution of the former Yugoslavia, Serbia has not been nominated for an Oscar although in 2008 they were close with The Trap which was on the Shortlist. It should be mentioned that the former Yugoslavia was nominated for an Oscar six times.

Albania Albania has chosen its representative film for the next Oscars. It's Three Lions Heading to Venice and it is the story of two directors who undertake a journey to go to the Venice Film Festival. On the way they meet two actresses from adult films, which changes the reason for their trip. This is Jonid Jorgji's first film as Director. Perú Peru is, this year, the second Latin American country so far to choose its representative for the next Oscars. It is Manco Cápac (the title in English is Powerful Chief) and it tells the story of Elisban, a young man who comes to the city looking for a friend for a job but when he cannot find him, and without money and no place to stay, he survives of small unstable jobs, in a city that deepens his loneliness at every step. Peru was nominated for an Oscar in 2010 with La Teta Asustada which so far is Peru's only nomination.

Colombia Colombia has chosen its representative for the next Oscars as Best International Film. It is Memory and it is about the story of Jessica who cannot sleep since a strong "bang" interrupted her sleep. While she visits her sister in Bogotá, she befriends Agnes, an archaeologist who studies human remains discovered inside a tunnel under construction. The film is starring by Oscar winner Tilda Swinton and includes a cast that features Jeanne Balibar and Daniel Giménez Cacho. And it is directed by the Thai Apichatpong Weerasethakul. So it is the second consecutive time that Colombia has chosen a film directed by a non-Colombian. Previously they chose El olvido que seremos directed by the Spanish Oscar winner Fernando Trueba. Memoria was a winner at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival with the Jury Prize. Colombia was nominated for an Oscar in 2016 for El abrazo de la serpiente which is the only Oscar nomination for Colombia to date.

Silly Spain, cost themselves a nod. Honestly, I think it's still a strong contender. It features a beloved Oscar-winning actor with international appeal and word of mouth is apparently very good.

Silly Spain, cost themselves a nod. It's funny that they already snubbed a surefire Almodovar nominee (and winner tbh) in favor of a Fernando León de Aranoa film once before when they picked "Mondays in the Sun" over "Talk to Her" in one of their most baffling decisions. And it didn't work since "Mondays" didn't get nominated (although it's a very good film). I guess they just don't want don Pedro to overshadow everyone else all the time
