The film is available now on AppleTV+ and in movie theaters. At the Sundance Film Festival this year, it won all of the top prizes.
Minari was the big Sundance winner last year, and that became a major Oscar contender.
Here are the ratings so far:
IMDB - 8.2/10 Rotten Tomatoes - 96% approval, 7.9/10 critical mean Metacritic - 72/100
Potential awards:
Best Picture Best Director - Sian Heder Best Adapted Screenplay - Sian Heder Best Actress - Emilia Jones (it'll be a sad state of affairs, if this gets written as a supporting role) Best Supporting Actress - Marlee Matlin Best Supporting Actor - Troy Kotsur, Engenio Derbez, or Daniel Durant
Best Film Editing - Geraud Brisson

I do think AppleTV+ will be like Netflix very soon in terms of film award success. They may even do better than Netflix sooner looking at their lineup for next year, but CODA doesn’t seem like it will go that far to me aside from maybe Marlee Matlin in Supporting because she’s a former winner who is already campaigning, and maybe Troy Kotsur because I’ve seen a lot of praise for him and Supporting Actor seems pretty empty right now.
I could be very wrong if more things get pushed back to 2022, but if most everything opens as expected, I think there will be too much competition in other categories for it to breakthrough.

I just finished watching film -- I have AppleTV+. It is extremely good, and probably one of the best films I have seen within the last three years.
Emilia Jones gives by far the best performance. She sings, she signs, and makes you cry at the end. All of the critical reviews have highly praised her performance. I cannot logically see how she's not in the Best Actress conversation. After you see the film, there should be no doubt, she'll be in the conversation. In fact, I can see her winning the Oscar, SAG, or BAFTA (she's British).
The other standouts were Troy Kotsur as the Dad. He is extremely funny, especially when he signs about sex. There's a great moment at the end, when has a face-to-face conversations with Ruby on a truck.
I also really loved Eugenio Derbez as the snotty and uppity music teacher. The performance could have easily been a cliche, but Derbez makes it fresh and presents different layers.
Sian Heder's direction and writing are excellent as well. Although, I would consider it more of a writing achievement than a directing achievement.
You guys have mentioned Marlee Martin here. But from what I saw, I didn't much award-bait acting. Grant it, I didn't see much award-bait acting from Jacki Weaver in Silver Linings Playbook, but I guess, that's what happens, when the Academy falls deeply in love with a film.
Last year, Apple got two of their films nominated for Oscars -- Greyhound and Wolfwalkers. Sofia's Coppola's On the Rocks did get some major attention for Bill Murray, but that's about it. Boys State didn't make the cut for Best Documentary. This year, I think they'll campaign for CODA, Finch, and The Tragedy of Macbeth.

I am not saying she's shoo-in to win any of those awards, but I fully expect her to be in the conversation for Best Actress. Jones' performance is outstanding, when you consider all the heavy-lifting she has to do.

I wanna see this but I don't have Apple TV. I keep hearing good things about the performances especially from the lead.

I have, yes. I think Jones was amazing in it (she's my current winner), and I'd love to see her get nominated. But I'm being realistic here, and not letting personal preference get in the way. She's an unknown 19 year old in a small Sundance film that released in August, and she has to compete with Kristen Stewart, Olivia Colman, Frances McDormand, Jodie Comer, Lady Gaga, Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Hudson, Penelope Cruz, Jennifer Lawrence, Cate Blanchett, Tessa Thompson, Halle Berry etc. I'm just not sure where you're getting your confidence from, other than just your personal opinion on the performance, which don't mean shit in terms of the Oscar race. I mean you posted the Gold Derby odds, you can see that no one is really buying a nom for her, but you.

Jennifer Lawrence got nominated for Winter's Bone, and she was an unknown before then. It is not unheard of, for a rookie/lesser known actress to get nominated for an Oscar, SAG, or BAFTA nomination. To me, it's foolish to say she has no shot of getting nominated here, especially given the amount of acclaim and acting chops on display.
Speaking of Winter's Bone, do you remember when it was first released? How about Little Miss Sunshine?
You have indicated that here that CODA's only nomination chance is maybe Marlee Maitlin. No chance for picture, director, or adapted screenplay.
We will see what happens. I just think you're dead wrong.

I mean I'd say JLaw was definitely an anomaly and not a good precedent for Jones, but anyway. And 'acclaim' and 'acting chops' are such broad terms that will end up applying to a shit ton of performances this year, you need a lot more than just that to go your way for you to even get a nom, let alone be a legitimate threat for the win. Like with our King Richard discussion, I can see that we're just going to end up going around in circles on this one. We will see what happens. I just think know you're dead wrong

I just think know you're dead wrong This year, we had Vanessa Kirby and Andra Day. Last year, we had Cynthia Erivo. Before that, we had Lady Gaga, Yalitza Aparicio, Daniel Kaluuya, Margo Robbie, Ruth Nagga, and Felicity Jones. Just because she's young/non-household name, doesn't disqualify her. Pretty much all of the critical reviews on CODA, point out how brilliant Jones was.
You're on record that the film has no chance of getting picture, director, actress, supporting actor, or adapted screenplay attention from the industry awards. We will see what happens.
As for the King Richard discussion, I also believe it is wrong to dismiss Green's direction based on the trailer alone. I mentioned films which were nominated for Best Director at the Oscars and/or DGA awards. But you choose to dodge that. So again, we agree to disagree here.

Just to clear things up, after seeing the film myself and thinking about it a bit, I think the film has a small chance to get into Picture and/or Screenplay, to go along with a potential Matlin nod.
Director, Lead Actress and Supporting Actor though, still no way.

Actually fuck it, I have little self control. Are you actually claiming that all those actors were at the same level as Emilia Jones is right now of being a 'non-household' name when they got their first nomination?? Because that's just crazy. (Except for Yalitza) I like how you casually threw the DGA Awards into this post, because you didn't mention them once in the King Richard thread. That whole conversation was about whether Green can get into Director at the Oscars, and you gave me 4 films, 3 which didn't get a Director nom. I called that out as not being a very good argument/example(s), and apparently that's me 'dodging' it.
