True Stories (1986)This is such a strange little gem, but it sticks in my mind as one of the few American movies that I can label as truly sweet. It's about "a bunch of people in Virgil, Texas" as they prepare for a big anniversary celebration. Many movies would look at these eccentric kooks as objects to point and laugh at - characters range from a man who has resorted to advertising for dates on the television, to a woman so rich that she never leaves her house because she can have everything delivered to her, to a happily married husband and wife who haven't spoken to each other in years (they have the kids pass information on if they need to communicate) - but director David Byrne (lead singer of the Talking Heads) just smiles and lets us look at them as people like us. Add on to this a funny and sweet selection of songs written by Byrne and sung by cast members like John Goodman and Annie McEnroe (as well as some from the Talking Heads themselves) and this is a marvelously different sort of film in most every way, made as only a Hollywood outsider could have envisioned.
