Every year I look to see who might be added to this vaunted list, and here is our 2021 edition.Obviously, there are some films that might be major contenders that aren't on the list below because they either aren't on our radar yet, or they don't have a cast of eligible actors (for example, The Power of the Dog). Similarly, some of these films might crash and burn as the year goes on. But I went through the list of films that I think probably stand the strongest chance pre-Cannes right now, and as the year goes on I will update the list accordingly.

A bit of trivia here: if West Side Story 2021 is our Best Picture winner, Rita Moreno carves out several unique places in cinematic history. She will be in the only Best Picture-winning film that was remade into a film that went on to also win Best Picture, and furthermore, she will feature in the Oscar-winning remake as well. And she will shatter the record for the longest span between appearances in a Best Picture winner, currently held (kinda) by Christopher Lee, who was in 1948's Hamlet and the extended edition of The Return of the King. Funnily enough, the original West Side Story is the earliest winner not to feature any actors who have appeared in other Best Picture-winning films.

I don't think it's a real possibility or anything, but Cry Macho winning Best Picture would be pretty historic for Clint Eastwood.
1. Becomes the 2nd actor after Dustin Hoffman to be the top-billed lead in 3 Best Picture winners 2. Becomes the 2nd director after William Wyler to have directed 3 Best Picture winners
