I think we can all agree that the US-backed overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy was wrong, but in 2021, I’m not really sure who would benefit from Hawaii being a sovereign nation again... What are your thoughts?

Hawaii will never become its own sovereign nation again as long as it's consistently a guaranteed 2 senate seats for the Democrats

There's no real political or economic benefit for Hawaii going independent now. Yes, it was fucked up how America seized it, but that same logic is applied to pretty much every single territory and state.

Would you support federal recognition of Native Hawaiians as indigenous American people? This is also a highly contentious issue, but it seems to be the only plausible compromise at this time.

I've not delved deep enough into why it would be a contentious issue, but sure, if they want to be recognized, let them be.

Some Native Hawaiians simply want a break from the US altogether, and to be their own sovereign nation again. Others worry that with federal recognition as indigenous American people, they would lose international standing/backing as a sovereign nation. Remember that before the overthrow, Hawaii had international agreements with the major world powers - it was fully recognized abroad. I don’t believe the same can be said for the indigenous American Indian tribes on the mainland with federal recognition. Also, the formal apology Clinton signed in 1993 basically grants legitimacy to the Hawaiian Sovereignty movement. The measure still in limbo in the Senate is known as the Akaka Bill. Biden would certainly sign it into law should it ever come across his desk. In short, some Native Hawaiians support it, and others are vehemently opposed.
