It goes to say something about how cynical and cranky I am when I see this this premise - which is flat out screaming (no pun) - for a balls to the wall horror film - by a guy who made a great horror (sorta) film with Moore (Safe) AND the other actress has an Oscar for a movie with horrific elements (Black Swan) - and think to myself, this is just going to be a gentle story of female empowerment/bonding/friendship isn't it? Come on Todd - you've seen Persona, you've seen Mulholland Drive, actresses are nuts pal - you know it.......- you used to make horror all the time - remember Poison! - come on! - you know where this story has to go

Sounds interesting. With this and Days of Abandonment Natalie's got a couple solid things lined up to do post-Thor when she'll presumably have some buzz going again. This sounds appropriate for the saturated visual style Haynes used in Carol.

The relationship is likely not as good as it seems and Portman watches it fall apart and has an existential crisis or something. That is something Haynes could apply a psychological horror aesthetic to if he were so inclined, make the house really confined and shadowy, exc. Although "female empowerment" seems to be the only theme anyone's interested in exploring in the early 21st Century so there will probably be that angle, at least in the marketing.

"Deeply uncomfortable"- Sign me up we need more movies like that these days.
Not to mention I have a feeling this is going to make people uncomfortable who need to get more used to being uncomfortable, like the "why would you want to play a bad person?" girl in the trailer.

Mary Kay Letourneau's victim reacts to the film saying "I'm offended."It is fascinating to me that a movie that deigns to explore how filmmakers and actors can act as trauma tourists pretty much did the same thing here, in not consulting with a person who is obviously the real-life antecedent to a character whose victimhood and exploitation inspired the events depicted in the movie.
