Independent free thinker or tool of Republican crackpots - or........neither? You make the call MAR ........ Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin on Sunday defended his decision to vote against a sweeping voting rights bill and reiterated his opposition to gutting the filibuster, declaring in the strongest terms yet that he is not willing to change Senate rules to help his party push through much of President Joe Biden’s agenda.
“I believe that partisan voting legislation will destroy the already weakening binds of our democracy, and for that reason, I will vote against the For the People Act. Furthermore, I will not vote to weaken or eliminate the filibuster,” Manchin, a moderate Democrat from West Virginia, wrote in an op-ed published in the Charleston Gazette.
Manchin’s opposition to changing filibuster rules stands as a major roadblock to Biden’s legislative priorities, as current rules allow Republicans to hold up many of the progressive bills the administration supports, including infrastructure spending, federal voting legislation and climate change legislation.

Given his age, I wouldn't be surprised if he chooses not to run for re-election so I'm not sure about this as an electoral play. Maybe he is a true idealist who thinks there are ways for both sides to meet and compromise, but seeing as he's been in politics since the '80s, I also have no clue where he's seeing that in practice. Hard to start any kind of good faith debate when one side has been devoted for decades to Lee Atwater's ethos.

If Manchin retires he's getting replaced with a Republican crackpot (it's West Virginia) which no one should want. This isn't a Susan Collins situation where Dems understandably want to replace her with a full on liberal Dem. And in her case the Republicans don't complain about her that much because they're at least smart enough to know that a full blown conservative is never going to win in Maine so that's as good as it'll get for them there. The Dems need to run moderates like this in Red states to actually force the Republicans to chill out.

West Virginia has been decimated by the private sector with the help of the corrupt political system and people are thrown scraps. But there’s been glimpses of hope with the big teachers’ strike and what not. That tells me that proper organizing and mobilization is needed to at least push the stage to be somewhat progressive. I truly believe every state in the US (yes red ones too) could be pushed to progressive side if there was a robust labour friendly party. As of right now, that party doesn’t existin the mainstream. But the desire to improve material conditions in a progressive way is there in my strong opinion

If West Virginia is anything like my home state (Indiana, thank god I moved), and I have a feeling it probably is, the fact there's a Democrat senator from that state is surprising in and of itself.

I think he's providing cover for a group of senators who're not fully on board with BBB but cannot say it on record.
Manchin can afford to take the heat.

Using the deficit as a reason to vote against anything is so incredibly disingenuous. The U.S. will probably never default on its debt, at least not in any of our lifetimes. We play too central of a role in the world economy and failing to raise the debt ceiling is a political loser given the severe economic consequences. Even conservatives know this, hence why they stop giving a shit about the deficit whenever they have the presidency in favor of tax cuts for the upper classes. If Manchin has an actual problem with some specific policy in the bill, then say it, but don't be a coward hiding behind vague things like "the deficit" (doesn't matter), "COVID" (how is denying a reduction in healthcare costs going to help, Manchin?), or "I can't explain it to my voters" (why not? Do you think they're dumb?).

Let me see if I have this straight: The Democratic Party and their leading Socialist ( God Forbid), geriatric crackpot, and 2 time loser Bernie Sanders - age 80 - attacks the de facto Republican Senator / Democrat in name only and dead on the inside charlatan - Joe Manchin - age 74 - for not supporting the agenda of the walking dead Democratic President Joe Biden - age 79. Hmmmmmmmm Now, sure I like a good joke as much as the next guy ........or ....do I? ......but Manchin bitchslaps back in what might be the greatest troll move since what ......... Musk / Trump maybe?.......it's almost like it's a parody of them tbh...... Charleston, WV – Today, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) released the following statement in response to Senator Bernie Sanders op-ed published in the West Virginia Gazette-Mail. “This isn’t the first time an out-of-stater has tried to tell West Virginians what is best for them despite having no relationship to our state. Millions of jobs are open, supply chains are strained and unavoidable inflation taxes are draining workers’ hard-earned wages as the price of gasoline and groceries continues to climb. Senator Sanders’ answer is to throw more money on an already overheated economy while 52 other Senators have grave concerns about this approach. To be clear, again, Congress should proceed with caution on any additional spending and I will not vote for a reckless expansion of government programs. No op-ed from a self-declared Independent socialist is going to change that.”

Hmmmmmmmm........ www.cnbc.com/2022/07/27/manchin-announces-deal-with-schumer-on-reconciliation-bill-with-tax-climate-energy-provisions.html Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.V., on Wednesday announced that they have struck a long-awaited deal on legislation that aims to reform the tax code, fight climate change and cut health-care costs.
The reconciliation bill would invest more than $400 billion over 10 years, to be fully paid for by closing tax loopholes on the richest Americans and corporations, the senators said in a joint statement. It would reduce deficits by $300 billion over that decade, the senators said, citing estimates from nonpartisan congressional tax and budget offices.

Plot thickens with the female Joe Manchin btw: www.cnn.com/2022/08/03/politics/kyrsten-sinema-democrats-tax-questions-companies/index.htmlCNN — Republican senators and the business community are mounting a full-court press on Sen. Kyrsten Sinema to sink – or substantially change – the Democrats’ economic package, arguing in private conversations that the new tax increases would hurt companies in her home state of Arizona.
And in a private call with business groups on Tuesday, Sinema asked a question about the bill’s proposed 15% minimum tax on corporations that gave them some hope for optimism.
“Is this written in a way that’s bad?” Sinema asked, according to Danny Seiden, president of the Arizona Chamber of Commerce, who relayed the call to CNN.

apparently what changed Manchin's mind was a conversation with Larry Summers. Maybe Larry can call up Sinema too because everyone wants this but the Senate GOP. It won't increase prices or inflation.
