Only one spot available.
In retrospect, which among these actors do you think was the most deserving of an Oscar nomination in the Best Actor category in the award season 2019-2020???
Vote and comment.

De Niro and Murphy. I wouldn't consider any of the others.

Pattinson should've won (tied with Dafoe in lead), and Mackay and Sandler should've been nominated. Would've been cool with Roman Griffin Davis or Taron Egerton getting in, too, and even Bale and Murphy were good.

Robert De Niro is in just about every scene in a 3 and 1/2 hour movie where EVERYBODY got nominated except him and got 10 nods - AND he has never been nominated for playing a crime character for Scorsese (Mean Streets, Goodfelllas, Casino, Irishman) either. They are never a meritocracy which is why, again, they are BS and make up nominations and make up wins are perfectly fine - desirable even - but you have to say there's an internal logic to their fuck-uppery and The Irishman got a level of acclaim that should have coat-tailed him easily whether you think he's good or not.....it doesn't even matter if you believe someone was better than him since again it's never a meritocracy ......it doesn't even follow their own stupid nomination logic and yeah I know he got a producer nod........ain't the same

Bewildering year.... Joaquin/Banderas/Driver were ok but nothing special... no excuse to vote those over the stacked many that year... Bale was astonishingly great and deserved the win for chrissake... Sandler, Murphy, De Niro were all great and deserving and those three were like respective comebacks/reminders what they can do... daring (career best?) work for the two comedians too... and a great bristlingly internal perf from one of the GOATs.... But Joaquin danced down some stairs and Driver punched a wall so them?? (half kidding)

Tie between Egerton and DeNiro.
Only on second viewing i realized that DeNiro's character and performance is unlike anything he has ever done in the organized crime genre, there's something subtly heartbreaking about it. The phone call scene should be shown and taught in acting schools.
You can't absolutely say that this is the same character he played for 50 years or so. Sheeran is not another Jimmy Conway, Sam Rothstein, Johnny Boy, Al Capone, etc..
Jonathan Pryce had no business being nominated for that average performance in that forgotten movie The Two Popes.

Bale should have been nominated and should have won. Dafoe, MacKay, De Niro, Sandler and Mikkelsen all would have made better nominees than Di Caprio, Pryce and Banderas.

Pretty good year for Lead Actor and yet Sandler should've swept.

1. De Niro 2. Bale 3. Sandler
---
4. Egerton 5. Murphy
Davis and MacKay were painfully mediocre, Pattinson was embarrassingly awful.

2019 lead actor was pretty much a wash. None of those nominated perfs are that interesting save Driver and I guess Phoenix (he's interesting but that's not to say good ). Sandler absolutely shouldda been there at least. Murphy too and maybe De Niro but if I had to pick, it's Ratner.

De Niro and Murphy. I wouldn't consider any of the others. I mean, he was good. Pretty good even. But not Oscar-worthy imo. Maybe I din't see it clearly because he's a comic actor and most of his movies are bad/terrible. Sure, I also love a good narrative for a comedian scoring a nod etc but I never thought he deserved one or that he would get it. (JLo on the other hand, she could have made it).

Bale. He was legit great and charismatic in FvF. He got Globe and SAG noms and should've gotten that Oscar nom too.

Sandler. This would also be his third nomination for me. The other two being in 2009 and 2017.

The first 5 on your list were all better than Driver.
