Oh, I really, really dug the hell out of this. I can understand people’s leeriness at the tired “why must a villain need an origin story?” trope, especially in the wake of something like Joker, but man, Gillespie and McNamara really nailed the tone that this project needed to work. The sort of Devil Wears Pongo vibe works so well, and while I can understand people’s frustration with the idea that Cruella needed to have a Dalmatian-based tragedy in her past, I still had fun with it.
And that’s largely because of the Emmas, who were matching each other to the absolute max and having an absolute ball. Stone’s gift has always been as a perfect stage partner to whoever she’s playing against, and this is no exception. And Thompson’s Baroness is a deliciously wicked villain. Special props also have to be thrown to Joel Fry and especially Paul Walter Hauser, who make for a fantastic duo and Hauser in particular deserves some accolades for playing such a delightfully bumbling character. I’d love it if Jasper and Horace stumblefucked their way into a Guy Ritchie joint one of these days.
The costumes are sensational (Empress Jenny should be a lock for a nomination and frankly, she’d be the best winner in the category since she won the last time), but man, I adored the production design and the makeup. Tatiana S. Riegel’s editing also made this film feel razor-sharp, almost Thelma-esque at times (that newspaper headline montage!).
All in all, Cruella is my favorite live-action Disney film in a very long time, one of the few that justifies its existence.

"She's just having fun." "...But my Krispies are on the floor."
Agree with your thoughts Stephen. I'm not a Disney guy actually and don't normally take to these movies....but this was a lot of fun.... a little Dickens, Jekyll/Hyde, definite Devil Wears Prada, and it had a lot of parallels to Netflix's Lupin too... Stylishly made and well acted (Emma Thompson is blazingly good) and a frequently awesome use of the wall-to-wall soundtrack.

Yeah, I'm not one for extremely obvious chart-toppers being that prevalent (part of what immerses me in a film's era is the more obscure stuff that a director can shine a spotlight on), but man, this film's soundtrack is sweet.

Agree most with what you said, but that first frame of the dalmatiants doing what they do really got on my nerves and took me a little to get into the film once again, indeed the cast raises the whole thing to make it all very watchable and that goes for rat dog as well, at least when its the real one because cgi dogs are just the worst, they look terrible here and that goes for the overall aesthetic of the film, is just a very polished, glossy plastic 70s city, if this is suposed to be a punk-rock scene needed to be dirtier to work.
Emma Thompson looking good though, could't getmy eyes off her... yeah, I developed a crush in a matter of minutes.

I loved it. Stone and Thompson are fantastic.
Stone has quite a few memorable moments. I wouldn't be surprised if she ended up in my top 5-10 at the end of the year.

Surprisingly, I liked this quite a bit and that's mainly thanks to Emma Stone, who channeled her inner Nicolas Cage and Anthony Wong and gave a performance so deliciously campy and ridiculous that turned a film that I was initially indifferent to into an absolute blast.

I thought this was rather good fun too. The main thing is that for a Disney live action remake/reinterpretation/reboot it doesn't really feel like a Disney movie. It feels like its own thing and that already makes it stand out from the crowd. While I found Gillespie's bargain bin Scorsese ripoff style to be a tad grating in "I, Tonya", it works better with a lighter, more frivolous story such as this. I didn't care much for the whole necklace plotline and all that, but I liked that the rivalry between the characters was more fashion-related if anything. It's a fashion fight where the audience is the winner because we get to experience a whole array of incredible costumes by the magnificent Jenny Beavan and they DO NOT disappoint. The garbage truck reveal had me like in the best possible way. Both Emmas are also a blast here. Thompson delivers a delicious villain doing her riff on "The Devil Wears Prada" (no wonder its screenwriter has a story credit here) and Stone gives an amazingly entertaining performance once again confirming her status as my favourite actress of her generation. Yes, it's nothing particularly special, yes, the CGI is occasionally very bad (that shot when she lands in the water, omg), and yes, not everything about the story works but the amazing costumes, the great Emmas, the general fun and energy of it and the new take on a familiar character are all things that are worthy of praise. And Paul Walter Hauser does an excellent Bob Hoskins impression throughout. Give him more good roles, Hollywood! He annoyed the shit out of me in "I, Tonya" but he did nothing but impress me after that one.

So just finished it, and hold up... You’re telling me Disney made a movie that tackling one of their most iconic villains, didn’t try and shoehorn her into some Maleficent “misunderstood victim” circumstance, actually leaned INTO the character’s venomous personality, and the movie was actually pretty damn good at that? Yeah, I relished this movie!

They've already greenlit Cruella 2... So... 101 Dalmatians? No, Cruella II: Mistress of Evil! Despite the title, I guess Michelle Pfeiffer will be playing the actual antagonist again?

They've already greenlit Cruella 2... So... 101 Dalmatians? I mean, the implication from this film is that as bad as Cruella is and can be, she's not the monomaniacal puppy-slayer that the original films make her out to be. That was bad press she didn't care to disabuse, and Roger already has it out for her due to being fired by the Countess on her account. Plus Cruella was the one who actually gives Pongo and Perdita to Roger and Anita in the first place. If they do decide to go down the 101 Dalmatians plot, I don't imagine it would be because she wants to skin the puppies for a fur coat. There's a lot they could do with the character that doesn't adhere to the original story.

Just hook her up to a generator and use her as an energy source, because this film is better than all other Dalmatians-based content.

Pretty dreadful.
I liked the relationship that kid Cruella had with her mom, as well as her early days with Jasper and Horace... but once she's all grown up every scene just gets stupider and stupider. Felt like it was 5 hours long and might just have the most overdone, cringeworthy soundtrack of all time. At a certain point I was just laughing at the wtf-ery of the needle drops. Craig Gillespie must be stopped.
Emma Thompson was damn good though... as were the costumes.

I've been avoiding all live action Disney like a plague, so this really caught me by surprise (especially since I was never interested in 101 Dalmations or Cruella as a character). This was an absolute joy to watch - the outfits, the tone, humour, playful heist-esque subplots, both Emmas, the creative backstory they gave Cruella. It was perfect.
