The ULTIMATE film star. In chronological order, I'm thinking...
National Velvet A Place in the Sun Giant Raintree County Cat On a Hot Tin Roof Suddenly, Last Summer Butterfield 8 Cleopatra Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? The Taming of the Shrew
What do you think? Any substitutes?

Any substitutes? She was a fine actress and obviously a legendary star, but I'm not sure if she even has 10 essential performances. Her career, as with a lot of actresses in her era, petered out as she entered middle age. I think at most, she might have 7 or 8 performances that could be considered essential if you are on a Liz Taylor kick.

Seems pretty spot on. The only substitute I could conceive is taking Taming of the Shrew (I don't know, she's just not someone I would associate immediately with Shakespeare, unlike her husband Burton) and replace it by Father of the Bride (nice little romantic comedy nominated for Best Picture, gave her a lot of visibility... and she did marry seven times after all ).

I'd put The Flintstones over BUtterfield 8. Hell, I would put her drunkenly saying "Gladiator" over BUtterfield 8.

As others have said aside from Virginia Woolf I don't think she has essential performances. For the films that most define her career I'd say yours is mostly right. I'd switch out Taming of the Shrew and Raintree County for Little Women and Father of the Bride. She was a huge child/teen star so there needs to be more representation from that period of her career. It seems like the main thing people remember about Raintree County is that it's the movie where Clift fucked up his face and as someone else said she's not really associated with Shakespeare.

Especially in RIAGE, acting against Brando, she was fantastic.

Oh honey, there's a cult following for Giuseppe Patroni Griffi's Identikit (1974) - released as The Driver's Seat in the US. I haven't actually seen it (maybe someone has?) but it sounds great: Mentally disturbed spinster Lise (Liz) experiences a series of bizarre encounters in Rome as she searches for someone to murder her. and her performance is suppose to be... shall we say hypnotic, bizarre and interesting...

I've seen it a lot .........it's not good..........but it's in some ways the ultimate in her delirious Camp phase - and this board does not understand Liz Taylor (by this thread anyway) or Camp as Art which is fascinating given........... that this board is almost entirely gay This movie has a jarring 2 halves to it the first half where you can't tell if what is happening is real or merely the perception of events and the 2nd half (particularly the very end) where it goes full batshit crazy............ It's very much like the psychological puzzle pictures of the 60s in its fragmented narrative - like Night of the Following Day etc . Kind of a must see depending on how much time you have and how short you feel life is - ESPECIALLY for one of the great Camp lines EVER by Liz herself "when I diet, I diet ..........and when I orgasm, I orgasm" which I later modified as my philosophy of life : "when I diet, I diet..........and when I orgasm, I orgasm.........and when I orgasm with someone dieting on Weight Watchers ..........it's the best of both worlds." She really really hates that dirty glass.........

Do you like Zeffirelli's The Taming of the Shrew, pacinoyes? An American doing Shakespeare!!! - and being BAFTA-nominated for it!!! MsMovieStar - Oh, my poodle, do you wear White Diamonds? I always preferred the smell and advertising for Black Pearls.

Like the performance and the movie a lot - it's like the Branagh/Thompson Much Ado About Nothing - good double feature actually - where you don't have to catch every piece of dialog to get it because the 2 couples act it by their expressions - so its very rare in Shakespeare - it's " how it is said" actually trumping what is being said in a way........lots of reaction acting, raised eye-brows, nods and stares and things like that .........everyone can enjoy it and Taylor (and Burton) in it ......

Perhaps also worth mentioning: her Silver Bear-winning performance in Hammersmith Is Out (opposite Richard Burton and Beau Bridges) and her Golden Globe-nominated performance in Ash Wednesday (opposite Henry Fonda and Helmut Berger).
