Which HBO miniseries was better? I never would have thought it based on first episodes alone, but I ended up liking Big Little Lies more. It was more inventive with how it presented its mystery, and the Kidman storyline was way better than anything Night Of achieved. The cast was also marginally stronger than Night Of's, though both shows boasted multiple great performances.
It's worth saying though that the first episode of The Night Of was better than any episode of Big Little Lies. If only the show had kept up that level of greatness, instead of settling for merely being 'decent'.

Big Little Lies. The first episode for The Night Of is the best of them both, but how it ended was the worst part of both. It was rushed and needed another episode. Big Little Lies was way more consistent episode to episode and benefitted more from being a way more artful Production

Eh...I guess Big Little Lies. I found both to be good-but-not-great. You're right, The Night Of's premiere is easily better than any part of Big Little Lies and is just straight-up one of the best hours (and a half) of television from the past two or three years. BLL never reached those heights (even Night's finale was arguably better than, or at least on the same level as, Lies at its best), but was more consistent throughout its run. Both shows are definitely driven by their strong performances -- Ahmed, Turturro, Witherspoon, Kidman, etc. were all mesmerizing -- but Lies was the more addicting of the two, and, while its style was obnoxious at times, it had an absorbing and original atmosphere that Night sorely lacked. In the end, though, both definitely suffered from playing it too safe.
