If Netflix had category-frauded Boseman into supporting as we initially expected them to do for Ma Rainey, would he have beaten Kaluuya? Kaluuya swept the industry precursors but he was practically reserved a slot for the longest time because of the sort of role he was playing and the field was relatively thin compared to Best Actor. Or do you think the same thing benefited him as Hopkins: a late-breaker that peaked at the perfect time?

I think what hurt Boseman and Viola the most is the fact that Ma Rainey didn't score bp nod and wasn't that well liked of a movie outside of its techs.

If they put Lindo in Supporting he would have been nodded too and that's where he belonged too......I think Boseman beats Kaluuya and Stanfield is left out ...........which theoretically helps Kaluuya anyway with no vote split.
Interesting scenario ........

I think Boseman would have won. Kaluuya was very good, but Boseman's problem was going up against an acting legend at his best.

Nah, they still had to watch the movie. Judas scored bp nod and Ma Rainy did not.

I guess Boseman would have won. Haven't seen Kaluuya yet but I think he wasn't that undisputable. Esp. against Boseman who had a very good performance and such a narrative.

I feel like Boseman would’ve swept, despite Judas being the stronger film.

I think Kaluuya would still have won. So much of the enthusiasm for Boseman's prospects just seemed like empty hype mixed with respect for his previous strong biopic work in 42 and Get On Up, not authentic reaction to the performance in Ma Rainey's. I was legit insulted and angered when people were comparing it to Ledger's Joker, which was arguably the most electric and bafflingly original performance of the past 50 years.
