Scored first nod in "Get Out". A lot of people didn't jump on that reality until towards the end of the season.
Since breakout, he's been in 3 BP nods.
Post first nod, people were lukewarm on him scoring another one. I think a lot of people thought Timothy would score one first but Daniel has managed to beat him to the punch. I think after he got good notices for "Widows" people started to see the potential for another nod.
Granted he does not have the Denzel appeal but he's 32 and picks good projects. I think he levels up big time after this win.

One thing that helps him is that he exudes charisma, you just can't take your eyes off him, and he will land big roles for that. Hopefully it will be good roles in good movies, but betting against him seems wrong.

I didn't care much for him in Get Out - I thought he was fine but not special.......I thought he was kind of brilliant in Widows and the Black Mirror episode "Fifteen Million Merits") and I liked his Judas and The Black Messiah performance very much .......... though I'm one of the weird ones that prefer Stanfield in general.......
His upside is off the charts........at 32.......that's why I made that thread with him vs. Driver - both of these guys could really rack up a lot of nods........a lot of wins.........across mediums.......with deep filmographies. These are potential metric changing actors .....it's a new playing field now......
You were right when you recommended comedy or wanting to see him in a comedy - he pulls off a comedic film - it's a huge big deal and positions him differently and more well rounded.
I still say Denzel hasn't pulled off a comedy in his filmography - that's not a putdown, he can do it but it's never really worked out relative to his stature imo and rivals (Bridges, Hanks, etc)............ and Kaluuya also has 3 BP nominees already.........Washington has 2 and only 1 with his name as a lead...........and that 1 happened when he was ~ 62 or so.

After Mahershala Ali won two in three years, I wouldn't be surprised. And he is an immense talent. I do think it will be some time, however, before they deign to reward him again, but the sky's the limit for him now.

There are a lot of black actors who can win in the near future, so I don't think he neccesarily has a better chance than many. Denzel, Samuel L Jackson, John David Washington, Michael B Jordan (among others) all seem to have baity lead projects on the horizon and all are strong possibilities to win Best Actor in the near future. But Kaluuya is obviously on the Academy's radar, so anything is possible. He could also not get another nod again. These things can shift a lot.

Hard to tell. Who’s to say Denzel doesn’t have a shot at it next year or Samuel L. Jackson when The Piano Lesson comes out. Too many variables.

I am talking about a newbie. Probably should have said next one period. You are right though, JDW has impressive projects lined up but Daniel seems to be on the Oscar radar. I still think it's crazy that SLJ has one Oscar nod and it has been 26 years.

But even discounting Denzel, if we are just talking first time Best Actor Oscar winners, there seems to be more black actors getting opportunities than anytime since the 90's. Aside from the ones already mentioned, we need to remember Lakeith Stanfield is now on the Academy radar as well thanks to his nomination. And he arguably has more pure star quality than Kaluuya. He'll get another baity lead role soon enough. Then you got Winston Duke who is playing Marcus Garvey in a biopic. All the guys from One Night In Miami will probably get offered some similarly baity lead roles. Even that dude from Bridgerton will probably get offered a baity lead role at some point. Just feels like there are plenty of black actors getting major opportunities at this point in time for Kaluuya to become a default go-to.

Certainly, winning the Oscar, has given him an even bigger push and ability to seek out even more diverse roles than ever before. It's hard to say however, if it'll amount to anything great. For now, I'd say he's probably in the top five most indemand newbie black actors currently, and I could see heading straight to #1 if he keeps up this strong trajectory of bold and different roles.

Anything can happen. If he continues the trajectory he is on, I certainly think it's possible for him to win sometime in the future, however I don't think he's next. I think Michael B. Jordan, John David Washington and Samuel L. Jackson could beat him to it, with the baity leading roles they've got coming up. Maybe someone like John Boyega, LaKeith Stanfield or a newcomer, before Kaluuya gets it.

He could win a Lead actor in the next 5 years just like he could never get another nomination, we never know with the oscars. Viola Davis is supposed to be our next Black Lead Actress winner and yet this year, out of nowhere, Andra Day appeared, none won the big prize, we don't even know who got more votes between the two but (at least in people minds) she challenged Viola for the prize and maaaybe with a better movie, things could have ended differently for her. Also Daniel Kaluuya is not exactly the most handsome young black actor working and it could cost him some lead roles but at the same time he has a very special face that could work extremely well for certain movies, like for Get Out, that picture of him crying wide eyes open is one of the most iconic of the recent years but that's not the kind of movies that generally reach the oscars. And Forest Whitaker won a Lead oscar, so everything is possible... kidding and maybe lazy comparison here but his energy and presence reminds me the young Forest of the late 80's / early 90's, after getting very small parts for Scorsese and Platoon, won Best Lead Actor at Cannes for Bird, was in The Crying Game and Bloodsport (shut up !), things were bright... But today, it's seems like more and more interesting roles are available to young Black Actors, hopefully it stays this way and Daniel Kaluuya and others talented actors continue to have the opportunity to shine on the silver screen. And others to get back on track soon, like Chiwetel Ejiofor, people could have easily opened the same thread for him in 2013, where he is these days ?
