Hopkins is slightly better, Boseman deserved it more.

Boseman wasn't even 2nd imo - to me the closest competition to Hopkins was Ahmed ......and then Boseman imo was 3rd deserving of the nominees. The real thing that separates Hopkins is how perfect the characteristics of the role fit the characteristics of the actor. I've said this before but one of Hopkins great tricks (it's not a trick, it's a technique actually) is how he hesitates before he responds in many of his greatest roles and other times responds instantly, like he's anticipating and pouncing on the line he was just given (Hannibal Lecter was ALWAYS 2 beats ahead in conversations). That comes up time and again here - where we can't quite be sure if he's gone into a fog when he hesitates........or if he is choosing his words carefully - whether he will be lucid or not - ......or how much of "whatever speech" he's already worked out in his head (anything related to "the watch" for example) he will go into and sustain.........the genius of the performance is how off-guard it keeps you and that is in the text and was not really captured in the play (and the play was great). You couldn't conceive of a better role for him, and you couldn't conceive of it being played better.......he frightens others but there is always this veiled layer that this smart man has outsmarted him and been defeated by his mind. There's always layers of greatness......that layer is a whole different level of performance imo......

I guess most of us in here have already made it clear that Hopkins gave the best performance of the bunch and that he actuslly deserved the Oscar.

Boseman would've been the best winner in the category since DiCaprio, possibly even since McConaughey.
Hopkins is the best winner in the category since Day-Lewis 2.0.

I didn't like Boseman's performance all that much unfortunately, but Hopkins is GOAT level in The Father. The best actor win since DDL in There Will Be Blood.

Hopkins' performance might be my favorite in the category of all time... It was breathtaking to watch. Second best of the night, but very far behind, was Riz Ahmed. I thought Boseman was easily the weakest of the nominees but still very solid and I wouldn't have begrudged him a win, but Hopkins won this fair and square.

Boseman wasn't even the second best in this lineup. Hopkins on the other hand is one of the greatest wins and one of the best nominees in the category of all time.

Hopkins is right up there with my favorite acting wins, such as De Niro for Raging Bull, Lancaster in Elmer Gantry and Anna Magnani in The Rose Tattoo.
And yet I still feel bad that Boseman lost, specifically for his widow who would have presumably given the acceptance speech. What an utter fuck-up on the producers' part.

Boseman was the best part of Ma Rainey. Though I never expected Hopkins to exceed his Remains of the Day performance but he does in The Father. He gets my vote. Both would be deserving winners.

Boseman's performance was the one of a great promising actor.
Hopkins's performance was the one of a legendary actor who rightfully belongs among the top 10 GOATs of acting.

It sucks that it had to get to the point where his family had to speak up about it.

I didn't understand Boseman film. So Hopkins. Both were based on theatrical plays. But I connect with the alzheimer one, and not with the 30s jazz play. Maybe because I'm white, latinamerican from the tango land.- I feel no connection, also I'm not a theatre lover, I usually don't like filmed theatre.- However I liked much more Viola Davis there. I think she deserved more the Oscar than McDormand.-

Hopkins
Boseman was very good, but the more 2020 films I catch up on, the further down my own lineup he slips. He's not even in my Top 5 anymore.
