I'm giving y'all three options because this is a weird fucking night. Honestly I could have voted for everything because this was just the worst. I feel sort of bad because I know ratings were going to suck before I watched the ceremony, and now I feel like the general audience who actually stuck around are never going to watch the Oscars again because of how badly produced the show was. 1. It had to be moving Best Picture so that it didn’t end the show. What a stupid ass move. I feel bad for Zhao because she was robbed of two historical moments by the weird placements of Director and Picture. 2. Not showing clips except for a few categories. Clips would have made a lot of sense in a year where everything was pretty under seen. Such a weird fucking choice for a show that’s on a visual medium that’s about another visual medium. 3. Speeding up the In Memoriam. I loved hearing Stevie, but that segment was so bad. It went by so fast that I missed some names, and felt really disrespectful to all those features in it. Not to mention besides the first and last two placements, there felt like there was no rhyme or reason to anything in it. Just spectacularly bad. Maybe Soderbergh can be left off the hook for some of his choices that he thought might work live, but I don’t know how he can justify that one since it was pre-produced before hand. He should and others should have been able to tell that it wasn’t working.

Voted for the abrupt ending and in memorian segments, I missed some of the names becasue of how fast it was, but the most egregious definitely was not showing clips or at least a sad little still of the nominated work, that's just baffling to me.
Overall, I think we witness a suicide, live on tv ! the most boring, tedious ceremony ever and in their usual real hollywood bullsh!t of "we're kind people" that at this point is a shocking joke. I don't see how any random moviegoer would like to go out and watch any of these movies after this presentation. Ddin't the ad said this was going to play like a movie ? Mcdormand got it right, it should've been a karaoke or something, this was depressing.
Forgot about one that is not in your options, what about the odd pairings on the tables ? Daniel Kaluuya sat next to Glenn Close, what was that ?

Not only do I see the general audience never watching the Oscars again after this mess, but there’s no way they want to see the films that were nominated now which should be the opposite of what you want an Oscar ceremony to do. I think it started out well with the funky opening credits and Regina King’s cool walk, but it just went off the rails. It should have had a host though and some kind of band or orchestra especially since it already felt like a club setting. The random music was just annoying, and I’d rather hear the scores from the winners’ films. Plus, I think music could have helped hype up the crowd or at least made it seem more lively because it felt like they were as bored as I was at home. Finally I don’t mind the winners getting more time to speak, but I could have done without their introductions if it was at the absence of clips. And the music game could have been fun, but should have been done early on to help set the tone as being light and not so depressing.

I've only been watching the Oscars since like 2007, so I don't know the answer to this - has there ever been another Oscars ceremony that didn't end with Best Picture as the last award??

I don’t know if it happened before this, but I read that the Best Picture award not being the last award of the night hasn’t happened since 1972 when Charlie Chaplin’s Honorary Oscar was the last award given. In that instance that makes perfect sense and not like the clusterfuck of this year’s ceremony.

Been following the Oscars since 2001 and I'm pretty sure all of them ended with the BP Award...

There were moments where you could see people scrolling through their phones ( including Alan Kim ) or with their hands on the forehead

The obvious two are clearly the reshuffling and the anticlimax, but my third is the choice of the clip for Promising Young Woman. Out of all the interesting scenes from that movie, how the f-ck do you pick the one where she spits in the coffee???

- The BP reshuffling definitely takes the cake. This is THE award everyone's here for, the main event, and even if it is predictable, not putting it last still makes zero sense. And it's strangely disrespectful to the team that worked on the BP winner too. BUT if I were to play devil's advocate, maybe it's for the best that the ceremony ended so abruptly after the Hopkins win. Imagine if the award was announced before BP...the vibe in the room would've probably felt very awkward with Boseman losing and Hopkins not being there so the BP win would've been overshadowed by that a little bit. And instead it's just 'Oh, the sentimental favorite actually didn't win, GOOD NIGHT EVERYBODY!' in like 5 seconds. Maybe it's for the best even if it felt abrupt.
- Not showing clips for the nominees announcements is a strong runner-up and a bigger fuck-up for me (though the WTF factor in your question is definitely more with the reshuffling). This ceremony should've enticed the viewers to watch these movies and good clips and presentations could've done something for that. Instead we just watched batches of people sitting awkwardly in silence.
- Glenn Close twerking is probably my #3. It's like, why stop the humiliation? Let's go further after her once again losing! Her shaking her ass at Chris Terrio (why are they together??) was not something I expected to see.
