Younger filmmakers don't seem up to competing with the scope and density of the greatest films of the past, and frankly don't seem that educated about the medium. Will I even see a single new release in the next 15 years as strong as an Annie Hall, The Godfather, Sullivan's Travels, Pulp Fiction, Mulholland Dr., All About Eve, etc. made by somebody who hasn't been in the industry for decades already?

I wonder about that myself sometimes, but then I think that perhaps those widely regarded greats of yesteryear might not have been cemented as greats back at the time.
Perhaps when The Godfather was released, film fans were saying the same thing...will we see the likes of All About Eve again. When All About Eve came out, were film fans lamenting the loss of the greats like Gone with the Wind.
I don't necessarily think it's out of realms of possibility that a great new film maker could spring up from nowhere and make a great film, worthy of standing with the classics. The problem is, now that everyone with WiFi can weigh in on the merits of it being justified as being noted as one of the greats, its harder to hang on to that laurel.
I do think that potentially, the great movies of these next few decades, will be there, but they will feel different to some of the more polished and sometimes grandiose great films of the past.
I feel like film will get somewhat organic and greatness will be, as it always has been, in the eye of the beholder. Mass acclaim and adulation is perhaps a thing of the past.

There's a quote from FFC that's something like (I'm paraphrasing) - "People once wanted to make the Great American Film ..........now they want to make The Great American hit"That about sums it up and there is no artistic rigor to "a hit". You will never top in the US at least - films from the 1970s (1967-1979) imo - because that decade could revise the existing prior great films of the 40s/50s - and it could seem a new result - because revisionism didn't exist much prior (there were isolated examples - Sunset Blvd for one). Now even if you copy the late 60s-70s template, you're in effect creating a copy of a copy of a copy.......it was not just the high water mark for movies but acting (all the best actors are from this era by default except Brando really), writing, director's vision in the US at least........all the components. The only way that movies have gotten better since the 70's in the US is actually in.............any kind of special effects.  I've said this before - all Art has a peak - poetry had a peak.......Jazz had a peak too........you can still get great new examples of both in 2021.......so while you don't have to worry about the future in that sense - there'll always be good or great movies and one may break through........but it's paying diminishing returns and always will. What I would look for is a genre return not a medium return .........there's some great horror work for example to me.......you have to take it where you can get it.........but also understand it ain't Sullivan's Travels which is tremendously sophisticated and wise tbh.........I wouldn't think young filmmakers could wrap their heads around that dialog tbh..........much less MAKE it  |

I was definitely pretty concerned in the 17/18 period. Phantom Thread was an all timer but aside from that it was just barren. Saw 40-50 movies both years and liked almost nothing. 19 was better and I was actually able to have a solid top ten that year of movies I liked which I hadn't been able to do for a while. I'm looking forward to things like Nightmare Alley and the new PTA this year so we'll see.
It is certainly possible to have individual masterpieces but movies as a whole aren't where they were in the 50's and 60's or even like 15 years ago. It seems hard to believe that you regularly had dramas for adults getting wide releases in multiplexes and making money even as recently as the late 2000's. It's just become so dominated by tentpoles. Maybe more of an emphasis on streaming can change that.

I completely disagree. There have been multiple films from younger filmmakers this past decade that have been on par (or even better) than many of the so called "classics". Here are some examples:

La Flor (2018)
Truth And Justice (2019)
You just have to broaden your horizons a little.

big budget american cinema is in quite possibly the worst place it has ever been except for maybe like...the early 60s? the early 30s? it's really bad though. but there is so much else going on in the world (not to mention low/no budget american stuff) that it doesn't really worry me...
as for new directors/great debuts there are plenty. isiah medina. mariano llinas. The World is Full of Secrets. Empty Metal. lawrence lek. Jessica Forever. hell, takashi makino could probably make my top 10 of all time on a good day and he's in his early 40s.

I feel you. I do feel like the future of film, in North America anyway, is definitely on a decline, and it's accelerated by AI and money hungry executives obsessed with algorithms and social media metrics. I think Scorsese summed it up best when he said when he said all execs care about now is box office. He basically said when he was coming up, yes they did care about money but they also seemed to genuinely love art so there was a good balance between the two. That doesn't exist anymore
I hope that North American film industry declining shows artists in other countries that they should move away from trying to "make it" in America, and it shouldn't be a source of validation. I think many already know that

We've seen just in the past year just how much trouble the film industry is in. The fact is last year's Barbenheimer was an anomalous event and probaly won't be repeated anytime soon. More anecdotally, I've been reading how "below the line" workers in Hollywood have gone months, if not a full year, without any projects.

Hollywood is definitely in the crapper.
Maybe foreign films are still ok, but Hollywood is at a low point. Worse than anything I've seen at any point in history unless like the late 20s/early 30s but there were less movies then.
I've also really liked only 6 movies in the last 8 years.
Every other medium is at least decent. Or not much different than they were 25 years ago.
Also no movie stars anymore. 90s were the movie star era. These days nobody except this board and a small contingent of people cares about these faces anymore.
I'll even name the 6: American Honey, Toni Erdmann, La Flor, Solar Walk, Terminator: Dark Fate, Promising Young Woman. Maybe Certain Woman.
Roughly half of those are Hollywood. And even then half are independent. Thats 2 Hollywood movies in the last 8 years.

I'm worried now about the future of just being able to watch something with coherent screenplays in 3 acts ....only Late Night With the Devil and The Beast have had that for me this year......and even in movies I sort of liked parts of - which isn't much - Janet Planet, most of Challengers, Ghostlight, etc. it's been just some movie "moments" only in them........with something wholly unsatisfying about them simultaneously.......... Mess of a year so far tbh..... |
