Hmmmmmmm........
Park Chan-wook is set to direct a TV adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize–winning 2015 novel, The Sympathizer. Nguyen announced the news on Twitter, writing, “Thrilled to finally announce that @a24 has optioned THE SYMPATHIZER for TV, with director Park Chan-wook, whose films include THE HANDMAIDEN. His OLDBOY was a big influence on THE SYMPATHIZER, and I can’t imagine a better person to direct this TV adaptation with @rhombusmedia!” Nguyen added, “I’ll be talking to Lee Isaac Chung of MINARI for the A24 podcast and will gush more about Park Chan-wook then,” as well as, “I hope Park Chan-wook, who did wonders with the octopus in OLDBOY, will be equally imaginative with the squid in THE SYMPATHIZER …”
The Sympathizer is a genre-bending epic that follows an unnamed Vietnamese narrator who works as a communist double agent after immigrating to the United States. The novel was the first, by Vulture’s estimation, to win both the Edgar Award and the Pulitzer Prize in the same year. Park is the visionary Korean director behind The Vengeance Trilogy as well as The Handmaiden. www.vulture.com/2021/04/park-chan-wook-to-direct-tv-adaptation-of-the-sympathizer.html

Fuck yes. An amazing book that would make for a staggeringly good adaptation, and Park is a fantastic fit.

S1, E1Dazzling virtuousity by the world's best current director (ok, "arguably") who makes an episode 1 that is sort of the inverse of his love it or hate it Decision To Leave (loved it, thanx) by laying on so much so fast you might get lost but never bored.....it also evokes - in the first 10 minutes Oldboy - a prisoner, pliers to the teeth, a woman punched in the face, and complete scene setting / shifing: The bravura opening plays out in a theater showing Emmanuelle - I mean Death Wish - which is itself funny.......and in the masters hand his jokes come fast and funny - "Can you pick up my dry cleaning?".......one of the many pleasures of the show is how the West imposes itself culturally on Vietnam - Coca Cola, Budweiser, Hollywood ....as RDJ says "This war ain't over .......yet"Bound to make some people give up after 1 episode........bound to be an immediate cult film for others who say we don't get this type of dazzling adult entertainment these days we get shit like Civil War and daft politics like Franklin..........oh and RDJ may have that Emmy to go with the Oscar......just sayin'....... Essential viewing, obviously

Essential viewing, obviously By the way - even if you find this hard to follow and not for you, make sure to watch the scene where a fight breaks out when our lead - Hoa Xuande - is insulted and someone jumps to defend him........this scene is brilliant satire, funny af and deeply sad.........as if everyone jumps into Vietnam's business and foolishly fight while Hoa Xuande's future is discussed in the most disarming, direct way possible..........this is a great Chan wook Park scene and I haven't seen it discussed anywhere.........that's how subtle it is .........

Bound to make some people give up after 1 episode........ I’d say it’s more accurately the inverse of The Little Drummer Girl, which this already mirrors thematically but this seems to take a more dynamic, restless (and of course satirical) approach, whereas LDG was more of a slow burn that I think lost some people in the other direction and didn’t have as much humor. But yeah, this immediately hooked me and I can’t wait to see what’s next. I like how RDJ is sort of tweaking his characteristic persona here and twisting his familiar charm and charisma into something more eccentric and offbeat. Just found out that Park only directed the first three episodes, which is a bit disappointing. I had assumed he directed all of them since he did all the episodes for LDG...

Yeah I loved the first episode. The name of the show I found a great pun since it generates great sympathy for the "commie" side just because they are going for the indigenous control of their homeland even if relying on a misguided philosophy to be the driving force.
I loved the lead which is essential for such type of dramas with only one familiar actor in occasional cameos. In fact, it's the strength of the lead performance that you don't even miss RDJ when he's not there and he cannot overshadow the main pull of the lead's narrative.
Can't wait to see where this goes from here and where and how other familiar names enter the picture. f

S1, E2Not a review so muchch but just a comment on the way Parl comminicates visual with his camera cues - the way eggs or fod in general is shot and when he cuts to it and away from it.......has any director shot simple scenes with s muc menace since Polanski in his peak? When the activist student (natch, duh) tells hims "We were on your side" - "Whose?" "The People?" "Which people - North or South:? {All of them" the student replies......the tone is mocking, sardonic, frightening............"I could be a Viet Cong: Eggheads and appetizers........sinister jokes, smiles and grimaces........foreground and background shots of 2 tiers - a Polanski & Park specialty .......

Also, the flashback of rolling/crushing the egg is taken straight from Stoker! (Wasikowska listening to herself rolling the egg with her hand)

I'll be honest I was somewhat underwhelmed by this episode. I don't know what I was expecting but I found those shooting techniques intriguing only for a time. The second interview scene (after they question all suspects to determine the spy), I didn't find any tension, suspense, or intrigue in it at all nor did the visuals or cinematography techniques impress me too much. Any case, hoping the next episode to pick up its pacing, action, or some real, actual drama. This just seemed like dragging a less dramatic story line stretching it a bit thin.
