Tenet went home empty handed. Soul dominated its competition. Here are the winners:
Soul (5 wins)
Outstanding Visual Effects in an Animated Feature Outstanding Animated Character in an Animated Feature Outstanding Created Environment in an Animated Feature Outstanding Virtual Cinematography in a CG Project Outstanding Effects Simulations in an Animated Feature
Project Power (2 wins) Outstanding Compositing in a Photoreal Feature Outstanding Effects Simulations in a Photoreal Feature
Midnight Sky (2 wins)
Outstanding Model in a Photoreal or Animated Project Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature
Mank
Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature
The One and Only Ivan
Outstanding Animated Character in a Photoreal Feature
Mulan Outstanding Created Environment in a Photoreal Feature
My money is still on Tenet, but I think Midnight Sky got a major boost tonight among the Visual Effects branch of the film and television industry.

T E N E T will still win the Oscar quite comfortably but glad for Midnight Sky and Clooney’s team which was also great work.

the focus on practical effects hurts Tenet, but on the other hand The Midnight Sky is one of the most forgettable movies of 2020 so it's a real toss-up.

the focus on practical effects hurts Tenet Didn't hurt Inception and Interstellar, both of which feature a relatively small number of VFX shots and still won the Oscar.

Yeah, I think the Oscar is still firmly Tenet's. It's pretty easy to see how it lost here considering its practical nature. I think the whole of AMPAS will look at that lineup and definitely pick Tenet - it's the biggest movie and it's got the most memorable stuff.

We will what happens with the BAFTAs on Saturday/Sunday. Historically they go with films nominated for best picture/director/screenplay and the ones where the visual effects are the most blended into reality. This is why none of the Marvel/Iron Man era films have won in this category.
