For me, it was The Dark Knight Rises.
For non-blockbuster movies, probably either The Irishman or The Tree of Life.
Your most anticipated movie ever?

The Avengers or The Dark Knight Rises. 2012 was a hell of a year.

Well let's see - it had the 2 acting GOATS (they are!), 2 other guys I love (I do!) and the greatest sustained director in American film history (he is!)......and Viced saw it first iirc out of anybody I know - irl or online - and raved it and this is a man who does not dish out praise easily people I can't believe this picture exists much less the movie. Are we not men?

The Irishman by far. I was expecting this for about 7-8 years.

All of Craig's post CR Bonds for blockbusters. Maybe The Social Network, Black Swan, The Tree of Life, or Phantom Thread for dramas.

There Will Be Blood or The Master. Probably TWBB because of the DDL factor.

Return of the King, quite comfortably. A year of anticipation and, at the time, it was my favorite movie of all time.
As for non-blockbusters it probably is The Social Network. I also remember being weirdly hyped for The Tree Of Life, but I nearly walked out of the cinema that time.
More recently I think it would be The Irishman and Parasite.

American Gangster, culminating with the release of the 2 brilliant trailers oozing both, class and badassery.
Before that, definitely Lady Vengeance, Park Chan-wook knocked me with Oldboy, so I was waiting the concluding chapter of vengeance's trilogy... ardently, to say the least.

American Gangster, culminating with the release of the 2 brilliant trailers oozing both, class and badassery. Same. Those trailers were absolutely brilliant. GOAT Denzel at probably the peak of his starpower and badassness, the Great Russell Crowe still at the peak of his starpower and badassness. Other than putting DDL in there with either of them, you couldn't get a more mouthwatering pairing of great leading men actors at that specific point in time, imho.

I had a lot of nostalgia for Star Wars, so when the new trilogy was announced, I got pretty excited for The Force Awakens.
Then I saw the movie, and it's sheer corporate blandess and lazy magpie approach to trying to mimic elements of the original trilogy made it the last Star Wars movie I could work up any excitement over. The Mandolorian has slightly restored my faith that this franchise still can be better than mediocre, but that's TV.

The Dark Knight Rises. I feel a bit wistful thinking that I'll probably never feel the levels of anticipation I had for that movie.

Probably "Lincoln" back in 2012 just because I knew that Spielberg (my favorite director) really wanted to make it and that it's been in development for quite a long time. I think I can still remember its old IMDB page at the time of the "Munich" release when it was marked as 'Announced' and had Liam Neeson as Lincoln. The long anticipation made it all more exciting.

I also have to say Star Wars VII (as an avid SW fan) and Batman v Superman.
I kinda liked the former but it was no way what I was expecting.
As for BvS, I was really looking forward to it because... well, it's Batman against Superman, plus there was Doomsday also!! Too bad this film was a f...ng mess.

Hard to imagine now but there was a time when Johnny Depp was still an exciting movie star... I counted the days, then read and dissed every review, back to counting again - hours this time - until a good quality of Public Enemies dropped by... The Dark Knight Rises too (but who wasn't excited for that one?).
Both disappointed.

When I was a teenager, it was easily The Lord Of The Rings. It was my favorite book, and I had been waiting years for that movie.
In more recent times, Inception. Nolan was coming off that insane streak of Memento, Insomnia, The Prestige and the two Batman movies that got me hyped as fuck. The Dark Knight Rises was more like the biggest disappointment compared to the anticipation, I was hyped for that one too but I had already cooled on Nolan after Inception.

In terms of blockbusters, it has to be Avengers: Endgame (due to the sheer build-up the series did in 11 years) and Incredibles 2 (as a massive, lifelong Pixar and The Incredibles fan). Drama-wise, probably Little Women as I loved Lady Bird and I had no clue about the novel's storyline, so I was really curious to check it out.

Inception.
After all the hype with The Dark Knight and that first cryptic trailer and synopsis and knowing the all-star cast that was attached... anticipation was HIGH!

Toy Story 3 comes to mind, especially as somebody who had followed its production for years. Also Avengers Endgame, I don't think I'd ever been more hyped for a movie then that one.

All-time, having been a huge fan of The Matrix as a kid, it would probably be The Matrix Reloaded which was coming out when I was a high school freshman. Incredibly excited for a Matrix sequel, and...whoops. Well, I did like it well enough and still do to some degree, but the drop-off was pretty undeniable and I certainly had some disappointment.

For me it's a tie..between these two: I don't know who on the board was around during the time these two films were being released..but the HYPE around them was insane and I was caught up in it. Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace - I mean it's a no-brainer why this was heavily anticipated. A new Star Wars movie hadn't been released in 16 years and Star Wars fanatics were eagerly anticipating this film (they were sleeping in tents in ticket lines a couple of weeks in advance). Plus it was George Lucas, the man behind the franchise, returning to write and direct about the story of how Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader. The teaser trailer and trailers were some of the most watched trailers of all-time, not to mention Lucas was wetting the fans appetites by releasing those Special Edition films of the original trilogy. So I along with millions of other people were geeked for this film....and...the rest is history...lol. Although I will say that watching the pod race scene in the theater with everyone was an experience I'll never forget and the film did introduce one of the coolest Star Wars characters ever in Darth Maul. But I'll never forget the hype around that film. It was bigger than Force Awakens if you can believe that. The Matrix Reloaded - Another no brainer. When The Matrix became the surprise classic and phenomenon from 1999, people were stoked when it was learned that not only one but two sequels were following-up The Matrix..starting with The Matrix Reloaded. Everyone at my high school was buzzing about this film and the trailers did its job of building the anticipation even more. I saw the film opening weekend and really enjoyed it, I like the film alot more than most probably these days since I know its reputation has fallen..and the abysmal The Matrix Revolutions didn't help. But I just remember the insane hype around Reloaded and it definitely showed at the box-office, being the highest grossing rated-R film until Deadpool claimed that tile in 2016. I love the hype around big event blockbuster films and it was more impressive for these two because they came in the pre-Social media era.

Ever since I saw De Niro mention it on Letterman (19:57) in December 2010 and read I Heard You Paint Houses around a month later, I had the possibility of the film on my mind on a damn near daily basis up until September 27th, 2019. Nothing else comes close.
