Great stuff. I dig.
Alicia's probably my favorite actress under 40 besides Michelle Williams, and I'm a fan of Assayas' original and Maggie Cheung's performance even though I haven't seen it in 17/18 years. Could use a reboot. Be interesting to see a miniseries and more contemporary take.

Wish it were Kristen Stewart (since he's going with a white actress)...

Vikander is beautiful and makes interesting choices even though a lot of them haven't worked out lately so hopefully she can get a big hit in prestige TV.

Maggie Cheung is irreplaceable in the role. It just looks weird to me and it's weird that he's doing this.

pacinoyes - Don't you wish Stewart were doing this? Especially since the character, Mira, is meant to be American.

Would have been a great and obvious fit for her .......fits into horror by association thing too which I totally want for her........I would have loved to see Stewart in the film Watcher (2022) - in the role played by Maika Monroe - she's excellent btw, reviewed it in the "Last Great Performance" thread .......this is exactly the kind of role I'd like to see Stewart take on and is not too far removed from her Personal Shopper work.......I can't recommend the movie that much (though I liked it overall).........but Stewart would have a field day with this type role .......... Monroe who is 29 so in that "young actress" age range where hopefully she start getting more good roles.......reminded me of Lange in this movie (not kidding) and like Lange her background is not only acting itself (apparently she was a kiteboarder ........who knew?)

This makes no sense without Maggie Cheung, but I still enjoyed the first episode.

Probably the most film-like episode of a series I’ve seen in a while. Classy meta shit, and Alicia reminds us of the star quality which made her famous in the first place.

Okay I'll eat crow, this was actually pretty good lol. It's just crazy that they actually let him do this. I'm not sure this ever really elucidated anything I (and plenty of others) haven't already thought about before, but I do think the entire conceit is compelling enough to justify it - Assayas making a miniseries of his own film as a gesture toward a contemporary media landscape where the weird movie he made 25 years ago could now only exist in this format; confronting the contemporary media landscape that seems to only want to recreate the ghosts of the past, which is perhaps not all that different from what we've been doing all along.

Great take. The meta-ness of this show is sublimely rendered. And I miss seeing Vikander on the big screen, she consistently reaffirms her natural star quality here (good that she jumped on that EP credit, too).

Should I watch the original movie first before jumping into this series?

Should I watch the original movie first before jumping into this series? Agree with Tyler, and on top of that, if you don't like the movie, it's safe to assume the series won't be for you, because it's definitely more of the same.

Is this show any good? coz i cannot not watch Alicia. She is too alluring and endlessly watchable to pass on.

This makes so much sense I’m almost embarrassed I didn’t put that together myself. As much as I really liked Vikander here (accent aside), there was definitely a disconnect in that Mira didn’t really seem to be all that much of a reflection of her, in the way that Maggie Cheung was very much playing a version of herself in the original. But yeah, Mira seems a dead-on stand-in for Stewart.

Didn't realize this while watching, but def seems to clearly be the case! Apparently KStew was dating her former assistant while shooting Personal Shopper. So... Tom Sturridge would be Pattinson? Btw - Stewart was really good in her one scene. I wanted more!
