Just recently saw this (rented it) and overall I dug it. But I might be a bit biased cause I love shit that takes during the Prohibition Era (like Boardwalk Empire) featuring gangsters , tommy gun shoot outs , cool outfits and all that other good stuff.
Kinda baffled at the hate for this actually (34% on RT?!) .
Also this BOMBED big at the box office . Not that Affleck did a bad job here but perhaps Affleck should have cast Leo in the role for Joe Coughlin . Leo was one of the producers for Live by Night and he wasn't acting in anything at the moment (was probably balls deep in some model at the time) . Leo is a superior actor in every way and a much bigger box office draw so it would have made sense.
Overall I dug it and would recommend checking it out. (Keep in mind I haven't read the book )
7.5/10

It was good, not great. Also love the era so I really wanted tomlove this. Thought the direction and cinematography were both great. Screenplay let the movie down. Also agree Affleck was miscast. Cooper and Messina were great in supporting roles.

The sets, the filming, and most of the performances are all well done, but the film just feels rushed, if not a bit lazy.
