The man gave us such literary classics that spawned iconic film and TV projects such as Hud, The Last Picture Show, Lonesome Dove and Terms of Endearment, and he also won an Oscar for adapting Brokeback Mountain. Seriously think I might re-read the Call/McCrae series in honor of this master.

Oh damn. So many classics. I'd also like to give a shout out to "Texasville", much underappreciated sequel to "The Last Picture Show". Also how cool it was that he wore jeans to the Oscars? RIP.

I was familiar with his work that jumped to the big screen but never read anything he wrote.
RIP.

One of the great authors of Southern small town literature. Two of his novels are classics that got adapted into classic movies, and he also co-wrote Brokeback Mountain. RIP!!!

Thank you for maybe the greatest novel I've ever read, legend. Rest easy. It's a testament to this man's skill and depth of career that I have no idea which novel you could mean, because there's literally several that could contend for this title in this man's oeuvre.

What a sad loss for everyone. My favorite of his novels (one of my all-time favorites, in fact) is "Horseman, Pass By," which became the film Hud. It's little known, sadly, but it's a profoundly moving work of art. I haven't read it in years, but the final paragraph is seared into my memory forever.

It occurs to me -- is there a writer more responsible for creating Oscar-winning characters than McMurtry? Neal, Douglas, Leachman, Johnson, Nicholson 2.0 and MacLaine?

Well, Woody Allen.

I was thinking more in the literary sense than directly writing for the screen, but yeah.

Yes, that's why I phrased it that way haha.
Among adapted writers he's hard to beat considering even Allen only has one up on him.
