I felt I was even stretching things including Liam Neeson, but those first 10 minutes in Gangs Of New York of them facing off is the movie I'd rather have seen, than the one we actually got.

Yeah, he's at his best when he's got a female co-lead or at least an actress with a "presence", to work off of. I didn't actually realize until after I made the post, but aside from Posthethwaite, all of the co-stars I chose are female ones. Makes sense.

He does...doesn’t he? I wonder why that is? Looking at yours and therealcomicmans lists..he does have a better rapport with women. And by your lists..that’s two movies...The Age of Innocence and Phantom Thread where DDL had to go up against two actresses delivering powerhouse performances in the same film.

I wonder if it's consciously or unconsciously a competitive thing with DDL? Like with male actors, he has no compunction about trying to wipe them off the screen, and isn't particularly interested in helping male co-stars up their level to get close to his. But with female co-stars, their may be less of that competitive element. He'll often play love interests with female co-stars, so there usually needs to be more intimacy and give and take in those performances. In essence, he's more likely to act at male co-stars, and more likely to act with his female counterparts.

I'd have to imagine he's also the kind of guy who likes to treat his female co-star with some dignity, whereas he can get a bit rivalry-lite when it comes to the acting, whenever he's paired on screen with another male actor.

I was definitely thinking about it, but after I picked Studi (who was great in that movie), I just looked at films other than Last Of The Mohicans, and found enough options to not need to come back to her. She'd be a good pick for someone else's list though.

She's a criminally underrated actress who did some good to brilliant films in the late 80's , 90's and early 00's before becoming a TV actress with REVENGE in the 10's . I mean she was really good in Short Cuts , Closet Land , Twelve Monkeys , Revenge (the movie) , The Two Jakes , Blink , Playing By Heart, Another Stakeout , The General's Daughter , Unlawful Entry,Saving Milly , We Were Soldiers, etc. But besides that , I still think that she's the actress (as the matter of fact not just actress but ACTOR in general) that DDL had the best chemistry with.

Lord....now I'd love to see a The Last Dance style documentary with DDL going into sociopathic detail like Jordan about all the male actors he dunked on in movies for real or imagined slights . " Yeah, DiCaprio came up to me in craft services and asked if I enjoyed him doing improv in our scene the night before. I took that personally. So I made Leo pay"
" Yeah, Paul Dano. Good kid. Nice family. But that one time in rehearsals, he stepped on my shoe. I took that personally. So y'know, the rest of the movie, I had to act the boy into oblivion. That gave me motivation".

LMFAO!
"Adrian Brody..good guy, hard worker, and a good actor. But when AMPAS decided to give him the Best Actor award over me...I took that personal..and my mission was to use There Will Be Blood as a way to say..you muthafuckas made a mistake!"
What he needs to do now is during a Lifetime Achievement Award speech, bring the guidance counselor in middle school who said acting isn't a good career choice to the ceremony and precede to spend the whole time saying he was wrong in front of an audience of thousands.

I didn't. One of the reasons Ryder is so high on my list us because I thought she was better than DDL in both movies. She's not the best actress he's worked with, but she stepped up to the plate on both occassions they worked together.

I've noticed that he's hardly ever worked with any POC in his career like ever. He has worked with Native Americans actors in TLOTM and his love interest in MY BEAUTIFUL LAUNDRETTE was a man of Indo-Guyanese descent. Most of the movies he has made are period pieces which could explain the lack of POC.

As a lot of others have noted there's a lot of women on the list for whatever reason. Neeson is the only male actor who I ever feel like has had a real connection with him on screen, Jones and Strathairn are there because their performances are really good independent of him. He definitely had pretty special chemistry with Ryder, though, if DDL ever comes back I wouldn't mind seeing them play a couple again, that could be a great comeback part for Ryder too. Some of it is that his male co-stars have simply dropped the ball a lot of the time (looking at you Leo and Dano)

I've noticed that he's hardly ever worked with any POC in his career like ever. I don't think there is anything sinister in that (though he obviously worked with Native Americans in Last Of The Mohicans). And Gordon Warnecke, his main co-star in My Beautiful Laundrette (One of his few contemporary films) was British-Asian. He hardly does contemporary films, where casting is naturally more likely to be diverse. A lot of the period stuff he does is very specific and tends to centre around white society in Europe or America (Last Of The Mohicans being an exception) . If he was more into doing contemporary films, he'd have probably worked with more POC. Also, he did try to get cast in Pulp Fiction (but Tarantino didn't want him, as he had set his mind on casting John Travolta). DDL would have ended up working with Samuel L Jackson and Ving Rhames had he gotten the role of Vincent Vega. In fact, had DDL become a Tarantino regular, he'd likely have ended up working with POC actors in his other films as well. His career just never took that direction.

Well he's not my "favorite" actor - although he's a (lower half) top 10 all-time actor for me - and I don't think he's that generous a co-star either - I can't even get to 10 with his limited work (!) - and he's about as generous as Sean Penn is - meaning he could be - but often he wasn't and when he was he himself was more dull imo.......he usually needs to be the show.....for good and bad (mostly good because he's a great show). I've told this story a lot, I had an ex-girlfriend who would say she hated him because all he ever does is "act at people" not "with" them. Now she wasn't exactly right, and that's one of the reasons she's an ex - because I demand total agreement from my lovers thankyou! (um) - but she had a point. Anyway no order - just 7 - and notably........ no fncking Paul Dano : Pete Postlethwaite Vicky Krieps Brenda Fricker Lesley Manville
Lena Olin Joan Allen (who triumphs OVER him) Paul Scofield (see above)
