I went on Wikipedia and this is the definition of a "character" actor.. A character actor is a supporting actor who plays unusual, interesting, or eccentric characters. The term, often contrasted with that of leading actor, is somewhat abstract and open to interpretation.I'm very curious who are your favorite / always reliable character actors who usually show up in supporting roles (whether it be in film or tv) Here are mine... 1. Brian Cox . He is literally amazing in everything I've ever seen him in ( Xodiac, 25th Hour, Adaptation , Manhunter, X2 & Troy) Also I am so happy for his success on the HBO show Succession . 2. Holt McCallany Dude is the shit in everything I've seen him in and I especially love his work with David Fincher (Mindhunter, Fight Club & Alien 3) I really wish he'd get more work. Also loved his short lived show Lights Out. Thought it was pretty damn good/entertaining 3. Jason Flemyng Another actor that is always reliable Feel free to comment on my choices and also add your own! Thanks

It's got to be Stephen Graham these days for me .........great in The Irishman, great as Capone in Boardwalk Empire - actually I don't think I've ever seen him be bad - he's just a fascinating presence before he even gets to the acting and he can act/interact with anybody really.

God, there's so many. Will try to post some as I see them/think of them. For now I'll second the mentions of Stephen Graham and Richard Jenkins, two of my absolute faves. Jenkins especially is just the best. Impossible not to smile whenever he shows up in something.

His work with Scorsese is so damn great (Gangs of New York, The Irishman & of course last but not least his take on Al Capone in Boardwalk Empire was legendary for sure) . Dude is an enigma

Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci, and Willem Dafoe are my absolute favorites and total delights whenever they appear. My reaction is similar to Patton Oswalt though he is not exactly 'character' per the OP definition and also nowhere near the three greats I adore.

They feel like Hollywood leading men to me.
