This year actually breaks a lot of records.
1. With 8 nominations, Glenn Close now ties Peter O'Toole as the most nominated actor without a win. The record was previously held by Al Pacino and Geraldine Page, both won for their 8th nomination.
2. With Hillbilly Elegy, Glenn Close is the 3rd actor in history to receive both an Oscar and a Razzie nominations for the same role after Amy Irving (for Yentl) and James Coco (for Only When I Laugh).
3. For the 1st time in the history of the Academy Awards, 2 women (Chloe Zhao and Emerald Fennell) are nominated for best director in a same year, who are only the 6th and 7th female nominees in this category, respectively. If either of them wins they would be the 2nd female winner in this category after Kathryn Bigelow won for The Hurt Locker (2009).
4. For the 1st time in the history of the Academy Awards, 2 people of colour (Chloe Zhao and Lee Isaac Chung) are nominated for best director in a same year (I'm not counting Cuaron because he's white).
5. Of whom, Chloe Zhao is the 1st female person of color and the 9th Asian director to be nominated for best director. She's also the 1st Chinese director to be nominated.
6. Lee Isaac Chung is the 8th Asian and the 2nd Korean director to be nominated. The 1st is Boon Joon-Ho just last year.
7. For the 3rd time in the history of the Academy Awards, 2 non-English films (Minari and Another Round) received best director nominations in a same year. The last time this happened was the 91st Academy Awards where Alfonso Cuaron and Pawel Pawlikowski were both nominated, and the first time this happened was the 49th Academy Awards where Lina Wertmüller and Ingmar Bergman were both nominated.
8. Thomas Vintenberg is the first Nordic best director nominee since Morten Tyldum The Imitation Game (2014) and the 1st Danish director to receive the honour. He is also the only foreign director nominee whose film received only one other nomination (best international feature film).
8. Steven Yeun is the 1st East Asian and Asian American actor to receive a best actor nomination in the history of the Academy Awards. Riz Ahmed is the 1st Muslim actor to receive best actor nomination.
9. Yuh-jung Youn is the 1st Asian actress to receive an acting nomination since Rinko Kikuchi for Babel (2006), and the 1st Korean actress in history.
10. LaKeith Stanfield joins Marina de Tavira as the only actors to be nominated in an acting category without any precursor and critics awards nominations (since they became relevant anyway).
11. Jodie Foster is one of the few performers to have won a supporting Golden Globe and not be nominated for an Oscar. The last time this happened was Aaron Taylor-Johnson for Nocturnal Animals (2016).
12. With The Father, Anthony Hopkins is now the oldest best actor nominee of all time, overtaking Richard Farnsworth's nomintion for The Straight Story (1999).
13. Chadwick Boseman is the 1st actor to receive a posthumous acting Oscar nomination since Heath Ledger for The Dark Knight (2008). He is also the 6th one in the category. The last time this happened in the best actor category was Massimo Troisi's nomination for Il Postino (1995).
14. With 9 POC actors nominated in acting categories, the 93rd Academy Awards breaks its all-time diversity record.
15. With 4 acting nominations, Viola Davis is the most nominated black actress in history. She is also the 2nd black actress to receive an acting nomination after having won an Oscar after Octavia Spencer. If either she or Andra Day wins, they would be the 2nd black winner in the category since Halle Berry for Monster's Ball (2001).
16. With Nomadland, Frances McDormand joins the ranks of Meryl Streep, Michael Caine, Laurence Olivier, and Jack Nicholson to have been nominated in 5 consecutive decades. Her first nomination was for Mississippi Burning (1988).
I'm sure there are more but I'm tired. Feel free to correct me or add something.
