Oscars and the ASC usually match either 4/5 or 5/5 so my guess is Cherry was a fluke and even though I can’t recall a single memorable shot from Trial of the Chicago Seven the film is doing really well so I’m guessing it will be...

I'm actually getting the vibe that Dear Comrades falls into that "foreign black-and-white auteur" mold that we've seen in the last few years with Ida, Cold War and Roma. I'm thinking that takes Cherry's slot.

I usually don’t try to predict these out of left field foreign nominees because every time I do they go with a different out of left field foreign nominee that the one I guessed. So I’m just playing it safe.

This branch has sometimes unexpected picks, like Never Look Away (though that was probably mostly due to Caleb Deschanel).

Oh I’m sure they will go weird but it will probably be so weird we won’t even know it’s coming no matter how weird we try to predict them to be.

still conflicted about this because there are two locks (Nomadland and Mank), one really strong contender (News of the World), and then the rest of the field kind of blurs together. There's often one or two surprises in this category so the only thing I'm expecting is the unexpected. I think Tenet looks good for that 4th spot but isn't a sure thing, and then you have Trial of the Chicago 7, Judas, Da 5 Bloods, Minari, First Cow, I'm Thinking of Ending Things, and Midnight Sky which all make decent cases and have precedent.
that said, my conservative predictions are: 1. Nomadland 2. Mank 3. News of the World 4. Tenet 5. Judas and the Black Messiah
but if this category was ever primed for surprise noms, it's this year. It's partly my own bias but I'm not counting out Żal who's been nominated twice already and whose work on Thinking of Ending Things was striking and beautiful. Plus it's a divergence from the B&W films that earned him his two previous nods so there's a novelty factor there.

I'll stay delusional and will predict Tenet to the bitter end.
1. Nomadland 2. Mank 3. News of the World 4. Judas and the Black Messiah 5. Tenet
I would love to see Dear Comrades here. And I pray to the cinematography gods that Chicago 7 misses it.
