But I don't expect many allies on this one. To me, he brilliantly captures a type of person who is rarely portrayed on film: someone with low-vibrational depression who's also a bit eccentric, but not in any way that makes him either "threatening" or martyr-like.

He's very good in it, and I think James Gray really does something unique and special with him, which makes his absence in Ad Astra all the more of a shame, because I think Phoenix really could've evoked the loneliness that character exudes.
Still, though, I prefer his work with PTA and Ramsay.

Favorite and Best aren't neccesarily the same thing. I don't think it's his best work or anything close to it.

Haven't seen it tbh. I always thought his best leading performance was in Walk the Line.

I gathered it was your opinion. It's just one I disagreed with, in an inoffensive manner. If you don't want dissenting opinions, keep the subject to yourself

Well it's one of his best at least - and like a lot of his special work has elements of control that suggests a potential loss of control. He's one of those actors - and this is how you know he's likely to be an all-timer US film actor (eventually top 10? Higher?) - where you can rearrange his best work already because it runs deep - in his case surprisingly deep......... at just 46.
For me:
Best Performance - The Master
Most Overrated - You Were Never Really Here (great-ish at times ............but not that much)
Most Underrated - Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far On Foot

Makes me sympathize with pacinoyes for once. Oh, stop being a baby. We barely have any interaction at all. I disagree with your opinion one time, and all of a sudden I'm public enemy number one I wouldn't even mind this ridiculous overreaction if this was about something significant. But losing your shit like this because I don't think Two Lovers is Phoenix's best performance . I'd hate to see how you'd react if I actually did something offensive.

Gladiator Walk The Line The Master Her You Were Never Really Here Joker No it's not even his top 6 performances. He's terrible in Joker, Walk the Line is really just him phoning it in (with not-bad results), and Gladiator is a supporting role. But YDY.

I think his best performance is Commodus, but his work in Two Lovers is in the top 3 or so for me, along with the way underseen Buffalo Soldiers.

He was incredible in so many films over the years ( and Two Lovers is definitely one of his best performances so far) but I thought under Gray he was even better in We Own the Night & The Yards (I found both of those performances to be more intense / interesting )
IMO I still gotta go with The Master as his all time best performance
