Let's be honest if McDormand hadn't won 2 Oscars already she'd be running away with this thing.

Andra Day is a contender at this point. She has the reviews and the role. But she does not have the film (I find it hard to believe a virtual unknown will win Best Actress at the Oscars for a film with 56 on Rotten Tomatoes and 54% on Metacritic). I don't feel like enough Oscar voters will prioritise watching the movie. Day played spoiler, but I think she really helped Davis chances by slowing Mulligan's momentum. Yeah that’s why I think it might come down to BAFTA because I expected Davis to win SAG. She could win BAFTA to because they do like her, and Mulligan’s momentum just took a hit, but I could also see Mulligan getting back on-track at BAFTA too.

Anyone still doubting Nomadland?? Actually, this might give one pause. The last 7 films that won both Best Picture (either category) and Best Director were 1917, La La Land, The Revenant, Boyhood, Argo, The Social Network and Avatar. Argo was the only one that won Best Picture at the Oscars. It's almost cursed.

This has officially overtaken 2015 as the most random awards season in my recent memory, which actually is pretty awesome considering how fucking boring the past few ones have been.

All I can think right now is how lucky we are Jared Leto didn’t win, the way some other wins went. Let’s be thankful for that at least

I haven’t really been that excited this year because I haven’t had a chance to see anything in the theaters since spring, but tonight I feel reenergized because I hate when we get the same winners everywhere like in most years even if I like those winners. I’m just so over it by the Oscars because there’s usually no surprises, and even the winners’ speeches are mostly the same.

For the first time in forever the majority of above-the-line categories are still up in the air even after the globes (other than Boseman, Zhao and mayyybe Kaluuya). It’s brilliant.

This was so messy lmao So the two Best Actress winners, Day and Pike, were already snubbed by SAG, BFCA and didn’t even make the BAFTA longlist, so there’s no signal of industry support for either, and no chance to give another speech. Day gets a boost to the #5 spot, but could easily be snubed in favor of Loren, Adams or a random passion pick like Sidney Flanigan. BAFTA should go to Mulligan, and SAG could still be between Mulligan and Davis. To the Oscar? I don’t know, but I’m still sensing Mulligan cause BAFTA is usually stronger.
And BSA is even messier. I thought it was a 3-way race between Close, Seyfried and Bakalova, and all took a hit today. Seyfried and Close lost to Foster, who no one saw coming, and Bakalova (who seemed like the biggest lock) lost to a movie with 10% of Borat’s hype - on the same night Borat went on to win 2 prizes. At the end, Close and Bakalova are the most hurt, cause one doesn’t have the film, and the other has a movie/performance AMPAS is unlikely to even touch. Granted, Seyfried didn’t make SAG… So Foster might be stronger than we thought? Will SAG and BAFTA go to different people?

I am now very interested in The Mauritanian. Maybe Jodie actually is amazing in it, it’s just that no one’s seen it yet.

It’s also so refreshing to leave an awards show knowing as little of the future as before. All those sweeps from the previous editions were boring as hell - iirc, the four acting winners last year made a full-on sweep.

Yes, but so did La La Land, and LLL was the big, record-setting winner of the night, including defeating Moonlight in Director and Screenplay

Happy for Rosamund. HFPA really likes her. They nominated her for A Private War and they gave her the prize this time.

Best Actor is over. Chadwick's wife sealed the deal with that wonderful and heart breaking speech (though he was winning anyway probably. She just made it that little bit harder to deny that moment for Oscar as well).
No Gif?

I think it's very possible that we could end up with all POC acting winners. Boseman's locked, Kaluuya is nearly locked, Youn's chances increased significantly after tonight....... and I actually wouldn't write off Day so quickly.
I know it's difficult to overlook the film's reviews, Day not being a big star, the SAG + BAFTA misses, and the likelihood that she will be the film's only nomination.... but her personal reviews are raves, it's a baity role, her win tonight should give the film a boost and visibility, and she would have the strong narrative of being the first black woman to win BA in 20 years. Viola Davis seems to be overshadowed by Boseman at this point, plus she's in a role that's borderline supporting. I'm not sure I'm brave enough to start predicting Day right this instant (I don't want to give up hope on Mulligan just yet), but I also don't think she should be dismissed as a random Globes thing.

I put "I Care A lot" on my watch list. I didn't know hottie Chris Messina was in this.

I'm not sure I'm brave enough to start predicting Day right this instant (I don't want to give up hope on Mulligan just yet), but I also don't think she should be dismissed as a random Globes thing. One of my many predictions for Best Actress was Day because of the role and her being a newcomer, but I wrote her off because of the screener issue plus reviews. I still don’t know if it was just the Globes being the Globes but out of the three actress winners tonight, she’s the only one I see a real path for. Missing SAG could have just been a screener issue, and even with BAFTA trying to be more diverse when nominating, they’ll likely still miss some deserving nominees. If it weren’t for the rest of the film, she seems like she’d be the best fit because of the role, and everyone else has big cons. Davis already won albeit in Supporting, but seems to be overshadowed by Boseman and some have argued her role is really Supporting. I think if she hadn’t already won, she’d win. Same with McDormand if she hadn’t already won a second just recently. Probably too soon to win a third, but it could help her with a narrative for next year. Mulligan has been touted since An Education, but I always had reservations about PYW because the Oscars didn’t really go for Gone Girl or Nightcrawler, but thought maybe I was wrong after the Globes really went for it. Kirby has baity scenes, but who knows if voters will even watch them. I really wouldn’t be surprised if she was one of the snubs on Oscar morning because I feel she’s lost a lot of buzz since December. I was worried about late releases not having enough time to build momentum, but this year seems like one of those years when it was better to come out late.
