So, maybe I missed a line of dialogue but was he dead the entire time and the entire movie was one of his memory loops or did the memory loops start when he went under the machine?
While the movie probably needed to focus on Segel's character more throughout for that emotional payoff to truly sink in at the end, and the film does sort of abandon its thought-provoking intrigue for emotional philosophy, I was a big fan of this. It's not as good as The One I Love, but I really don't get the bad reviews at all. It's thoroughly investing and the performances were terrific. A truly original gem of 2017 that unfortunately is going to be buried under the rubble of better-received releases.

What I got from it was that when he went under the machine it's the viewer's first time seeing it, but what we're seeing is just one of his many attempts. He's been going under the machine a lot since she died.
