Happy birthday to possibly the most important black actor ever, without him the 1970's black film movement may have not happened. I hope he's resting well, and enjoying retirement.

Happy Birthday, a legend and a misunderstood one subject to a lot of revisionist history Not only important as an actor but the type of actor - important in his early work in the 50s especially The Defiant Ones, Edge of the City, Blackboard Jungle and even No Way Out where he's a Doctor for fncksake and still he has an element of danger, volatility, unpredictability to him - in No Way Out it makes his scenes with Widmark crackle in a way that is shockingly modern. Later roles he got shoehorned into playing nice and less of a livewire and even though they were good too, it wasn't the same as his early years kinetic stuff. Also, he not only broke through on screen he broke through on Awards, nominated (and won) at the Oscars (twice nodded), Globes (nodded a lot) and BAFTA - nodded A LOT - 6 times nodded in 10 years for BAFTA 1958-68 (!) - he was just a global phenomenon. With Cassavetes in Edge of the City - it's like an On The Waterfront with 2 Brando's (um)

Happy Birthday, legend! He's one of those few people alive, who really deserves this title. So many great performances, especially considering his filmography isn't even that huge. And of course he's one of the most important actors ever in a social-political sense.
