Well, she was known by her then married name of Rebecca Romijn Stamos, when she originated the role. Recently saw X-Men and X2 again, and the difference in characterisation between Romijn's Mystique and Lawrence's is like night and day.
Romijn was sleek, deadly, feline. From her body language to her performance, she inhabited the character completely. By contrast, Lawrence's Mystique felt like Jennifer Lawrence in blue paint. The character felt totally neutered in her hands.
So no surprise, my pick is Romijn. But some of you may disagree. So who ya got.

It's like compare a Ferrari Testarossa with a Fiat 1.
I like Lawrence Teenage Mystique, but Romjin was a top model in her Best shape

For me, it's not even a question. Romijn is not just the definitive Mystique, but she's a top three contender for the MVP position of the franchise in my book. She does so much with who is essentially a throwaway character, and I think it's because of her that they paid enough attention to Mystique to make her a central character in the reboot.
Lawrence is a great actress, but it was clearly a paycheck part for her and while she was fine in the first film, she lost interest fast and it showed. Romijn gave a damn the whole way through, and it also showed.
Essentially, I would love a Logan-style solo film with Romijn back in the role, directed by Jonathan Glazer.

Romijn, no question.

Romijn for sure. Probably the most phoned-in performance from Lawrence vs. an instantly memorable, highly alluring and highly entertaining Romijn? Not even a question.

You do have your moments Stephen, but this is particularly inspired Your idea might be unlikely to happen, but I can see Romijn maybe returning to the role now that Marvel are doing these "multiverse" shenanigans and bringing in all sorts of Marvel characters from other studios. I like to think that Kevin Fiege is savvy enough to realise she is considered the vastly superior Mystique, even if Lawrence is by far a bigger star.

I know a lot of people were bitching and moaning about Halle Berry being miscast as Storm but Lawrence's miscasting as Raven/Mystique was even worse. Besides, I thought Berry did a solid job as Storm, especially in the 2nd film.
But back to your question : John Stamos 'ex-wife no contest.

I voted for Romijn too but to be fair to Lawrence she really didn’t phone it in until Apocalypse & Dark Phoenix. She was decent in First Class and DOFP and was certainly putting in effort.

I feel like she must have put in a lot of work with body movement specialists or Circque Du Soleil to get such specific body language for Mystique.

Lawrence is clearly the better actress, but Romijn clearly was the better Mystique.

Yeah, I've always been pretty meh on Lawrence in the role (though I think she's actually decent in DoFP). Romijn's performance just had the perfect combination of sexiness and... um.... mystique that Lawrence lacked.

Yup not to pile on popular opinion, but it's definitely Romijn, she got the sleek shapeshifting assassin type down to a T. The only thing that Lawrence really has going for her over Romijn is that she simply got to do with more the role on a fundamental character level, largely because of her popularity, and even then it felt like she was already out of the role by the end.

I think Lawrence was much better. She was MVP in First Class and Days of Future Past for me. Then she completely lost interest.

pupdurcs Who would you have cast as young Raven/Mystique instead of Lawrence? Maybe Elizabeth Debicki?

pupdurcs Who would you have cast as young Raven/Mystique instead of Lawrence? Maybe Elizabeth Debicki? Elizabeth Debicki is a good call, though I think she was pretty much an unknown when Lawrence got the gig, so she may not have been enough of a name for the producers to consider casting. Of known young actresses at the time, perphaps Alexandra Daddario. There is a more sultry quality about her that is remiscent of Rebecca Romijn, and her eyes are stunning. I just think she'd be more able to replicate the physical presence of Mystique that Romijin had and Lawrence lacked. People hate her after hearing how manipulative she seemed on the tapes with her ex-husband, but I think Amber Heard might have been pretty good as well. And Jessica Biel.
