We don't discuss Indian actors much - once I did Amitabh Bachchan in the Greatest Actors/Actress Across All Mediums thread and he's obvious but who in the past or currently should we talk about more on here?
Such a rich and unique history and culture of movies too........

I like Akshay Kumar in slap stick comedies
Also, there is an actor called Kamal Hassan who is kind of like a prime Dustin Hoffman.

Wasn't familiar with Dimple Kapadia before Tenet, but I kind of want to check out more of her stuff now. The "M" character to JDW's Bond:

He's great in that. He also did a remake of Mrs. Doubtfire to pretty good effect.

I haven't watched a lot of Indian movies because I hate musicals, but I did take a couple of suggestions which I haven't regretted. Dangal was really good, with a stand-out performance from Fatima Sana Shaikh. And Vijay Deverakonda has probably the best Lead Actor performance I've seen in 2017 for Arjun Reddy.
But in general, it's hard to argue against Amitabh Bachchan. To me, he is more the Paul Newman of Indian cinema, in that he's gotten better as an actor with age.

Irrfan Khan and Tabu are my favorite actors mainly because I have seen so many movies of them but there are many more great actors of which I need to see some more works. Meena Kumari, Dilip Kumar, Manoj Kumar, Waheeda Rehman, Mohanlal, Vijay Sethupathi, Manoj Bajpai, Mammootty, Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil are some that come to mind.

Bumping this thread but recently I've become aware of Asha Parekh - though I'd seen her a lot, I didn't associate her with the name (and she's a big name).
My neighbors love this film Kati Patang and told me to seek it out - it was a nice surprise - corny but sweet and lovely - sometimes it helps to get out of your comfort zone with movies.
Should still be on Tubi btw.....

I have seen pretty much zero Indian films, but Roshan Seth has had the ability to catch my eye whenever he shows up in a Mira Nair movie or some other Anglo film.

Saw this movie a couple months ago but never posted about it - I should have put in the "Last Great Performance You've Seen" thread ........a deeply moving movie Paar (1984) with a standout performance from Naseeruddin ShahSuperb work.........really enjoyed it, would like to see more of him - though I have seen some other things too....I'd recommend checking this out if you haven't seen it.....

Unfortunately I haven't seen indian films enough, even to remember the most famous actors. The only actors that I knew, are the former Mrs Universe and Mrs Word actresses, the guy from Life with Pi, and some guys and gals from popular american TV Shows- I don't understand Bollywood movies, so I guess it's imposible to name favorites. So the answer must be Julie Christie and Ben Kingsley but I guess this is totally unfair option.- Frieda Pinto was wonderful, but she isn't a Bollywood actress, not only but also and she comes from Goa, that was a portuguese colony, not even a brittish one.-

pacinoyes Alia Bhatt is an absolute sunshine and such an effortless, terrific actress. Besides Gangubai, where she was so ridiculed when the first pictures dropped saying she was miscast but she proved everyone wrong with this, she's fantastic in Gully Boy, Kapoor and Sons, Highway, Raazi, Darlings, Dear Zindagi, 2 States. She was quite acclaimed for Udta Punjab too but I found her very artificial and miscast there. And she's so easy on eyes in Rocky Aur Rani ki Prem Kahaani but it's Ranveer Singh's show all the way. One of the most exciting actresses imo albeit a tad bit overpraised at times by the bollywood people.

Such a rich and unique history and culture of movies too........ My personal favority is Amitabh but speaking of the Greats, you MUST discover Dilip Kumar's filmography if you haven't already. He's the top tier as far as Indian cinema is concerned.

You guys should watch more from Kamal Haasan. Not my absolute favorite but i like him a lot. Arguably the most versatile Indian actor ever. Try to watch his films like Maro Charitra, Nayakan, Pushpaka Vimana, Sagara Sangamam, Swathi Muthyam, Michael Madana Kama Rajan, Indian, Anbe Sivam, Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu, Vishwaroopam. (listed in release order)
I haven't seen much from Amitabh but he is a great actor too. Shah Rukh Khan is a great entertainer but a limited actor. I find Ranbir Kapoor the best among the young generation of Bollywood actors.
South has many great actors (Chiranjeevi who was my favorite growing up and Mohanlal is another great) but their style of acting and the movies they do are very deeply rooted into the south culture that its hard to grasp the essence of those movies and you may end up not liking them. That said, do watch some Kamal Haasan films.

Really loving the mentions and recs in this thread now / the last couple days.......I've seen some of these but there is so much to see......it's exciting .....thanks so much and if you see something new that's great too - for example I've seen Dilip Kuma's Devdas (1955) but had no idea that story was filmed many times..... I also like that Alia Bhat made such an impression on me in the 3 films I know her from - and she's this big star that I maybe didn't put that all together right away about how much of a thing she was Expect to see her in my Celebrity Crushes one day soon

Kamal Haasan and Madhuri Dixit. Honourable mentions to Sunil Dutt, and my mama's fave, Rani Mukherjee, as opposed to Rani Mukerji, who I'm pretty sure I never saw a single film from.

Jumping in for recommendations..... I had a really fun double feature last year, two that bend genre and style like an undertow toward their bewitching, disturbing lead perfs....... Kaun (1999) with Urmila Matondkar .......and Maya Memsaab (1993) with Deepa Sahi. Are these famous actresses? I haven't seen anything else from them. Specifically, I'd like to see more from the Kaun director, Ram Gopal Varma, anybody have any recs? Thx! Also very fond of Sharmila Tagore in her Satyajit Ray movies (Devi, The Hero, Days and Nights in the Forest). Anything outside of Satyajit worth seeing for her? And a shoutout to Sahib Bibi aur Ghulam (1962) that I've been a little obsessed with over the last few years, very spellbinding movie and the entire cast is great - Guru Dutt, Waheeda Rehman, Meena Kumari, etc.

Tabu is a phenomenal actress. I would recommend Maachis (1996). I'm also a big fan of Manoj Bajpai in a film called Satya (1998) and he's also in Kaun which Mattsby mentioned. For another terrific Naseeruddin Shah performance I would also watch Sarfarosh (1999).
