This year is pretty open I think its between Viola Davis and Other.- McDormand always plays herself. So I guess she is a nominee, but will loose at the end.-
Mulligan was out of radar for many years, this is a comeback for her, but not an Academy Award Win.-

Wow, audiences really changed. Nowadays it would be practically impossible that a romantic dramedy like As Good As It Gets would make 300 Million.

I'm not really following the oscar race this year and I haven't seen her movie but it seems like Mulligan is the perfect option for people who don't want to gives a 3rd oscar to McDormand this soon Or for that kind of performance and people who don't want to give Viola a second one for another August Wilson's play (this soon) / Or because of the category fraud / Or because Boseman is probably winning Best Actor and winning both lead is rare.
BUT it's hard to vote against Viola in such big, obvious role in THIS special year.

Right now, I am predicting Mulligan to ultimately win the Oscar, but I could definitely see precursor split between the two to make the race a real nail-biter - i.e., Mulligan takes BAFTA, Davis takes SAG... We'll see how the industry awards shape the race!

Heart says Mulligan, head says Davis.

I think people on the internet, both on forums and on Twitter are really overestimating Mulligan. I think it’s largely people trying to wish it into existence. The tone and genre of the film won’t make it a favorite of the Academy I don’t think. I’m getting Nightcrawler/First Reformed/Us vibes. Hopefully she can at least pull a Rosamund Pike.

If she had stronger competition, sure. But Davis has won recently, her movie is not particularly popular, has a leading actor with a much better chance of winning, plus considering the weaker competition this year, there's a reasonable chance of PYW of making even Best Picture.

Yeah, and she's winning at least 1 big precursor I mean people think they are being insiders and can "read" forums or Twitter - but what's much easier to read are the precursors ...........and they matter a lot more anyway. There's clearly a narrative for her win and a screenplay win and they go hand in hand - no film or performance owes as much to its screenplay

Oh honey, I'd love Andra Day to get it for her phenomenal portrayal of Billie Holiday (but Davis is probably more due).
My second choice would be Fran but she's got 2 already and my gut feeling is this year a WOC will get it.

Ma Rainy's Black Bottom got to no.1 on Netflix in the US , which most of it's several Oscar contenders couldn't come close to. It's popular enough (and has also been winning Best Picture and Best Ensemble critics prizes) and a top 5 Best Picture contender. That sounds more like a description of Mank.
Davis is also one of a handful of super-respected actresses seen as expected to be a two-time Oscar winner at some point, so her winning supporting 4 or 5 years ago probably won't be much of a hinderance.

That happens ever year. Last year J-Lo was the forum, internet darling. People insisted she would win SAG, to make up for her Oscar snub. Even after Laura Dern dominated the critics awards, industry precursors, people were predicting Scar-Jo - because she was a double nominee.
Even if Mulligan is nominated, I don't see her as this big front runner people here are insisting. She was the critics favorite with An Education and won the BAFTA. The Oscar went to Sandra Bullock.

If it got #1 in the US is not necessarily an indication of great popularity, it really is more about how long it managed to stay there, or in the top positions (I don't live in the US, so I don't get the numbers for it). Mank got high on the list in most places in it's release, then dropped drastically, although that doesn't seem to be the case of MRBB. In anyway, Ma Rainey' was clearly not a mega-hit in the platform like some other movies were, let alone something like The Queen's Gambit or Tiger King, and there doesn't seem to be a big passionate following for it from what I can tell.

Yeah- pretty much any movie could have an acting winner, but having two seems to be a case only when a movie has a lot of support, and is either a BP winner or something that could have been in a different year.

Davis.
First black Lead Actress winner since Halle Berry + Transformative, baity role + Singing + Real life person + Her biggest competition is an actress who hasn’t been on the Academy’s radar in more than a decade in a ‘difficult’ film.
