Didn't see a thread for this (?) - good article from the awesome World of Reelwww.worldofreel.com/ The International Film committee shortlist usually consists of 9-10 films. However, this year, the Academy decided to expand the shortlist to 15 films, all done through popular vote, which now almost doubles the number of selections up for consideration. This decision was made with just three weeks left in voting and has let numerous country’s film committees scrambling to amp up their FYC campaigns.
MAJOR CONTENDERS “Two of Us” (France) “Dear Comrades!” (Russia) “Another Round” (Denmark) “I’m No Longer Here” (Mexico) “Collective” (Romania) “My Little Sister” (Switzerland) “Quo Vadis, Aida?” (Bosnia and Herzegovina) “Beginning” (Georgia)
POSSIBLE THREATS
“The Mole Agent” (Chile) “Charlatan” (Czech Republic) “Never Gonna Snow Again” (Poland) “Night of Kings” (Ivory Coast) “Asia” (Israel) “Arract” (Ireland) “Toorbos” (South Africa)
DARK HORSES “A Sun” (Taiwan) “Vitalina Varela” (Portugal) “Atlantis” (Ukraine) “Apples”(Greece) “Charter” (Switzerland) “La Llorona” (Guatemala)

Funny how with some critics backing A Sun and La Llorona are merely “dark horses” while the French and Swiss submissions are “major contenders”. How very typical lmao.

I've seen five of these... La Llorona was pretty good, an interesting idea that plays less interesting on screen than it should but there's a dark, dense mood to it and it has one of the best opening shots of the year. The Mole Agent, a fun idea and nearly charming but really felt gimmicky and forced at times to me. Another Round was good but didn't catch me like it did for most, A Sun a favorite of mine from the year - flawed but great-ish, and there's Collective which is sort of the undeniable standout here I think......
Haven't heard of most of the others. Georgia's Beginning will be streaming on Mubi Jan 29, may check it out....

I read that Willem Dafoe and Spike Lee are among the Oscar voters who have already spoken out in favour of Vitalina Varela, expressing great admiration for the film and its director (Pedro Costa). But given Portugal's track record with these awards, one can never be too optimistic (or optimistic at all).

I still think it will just be an easy win for Another Round.

From what I've seen, looks like an easy path for the drinking buddies, but Cuaron and Del Toro are behind I'm No Longer Here, not sure what impact that could have, and a few others like Quo Vadis Aida and Charlatan are very straightforward, that I can see them as "friendly" to oscar voters.
Very much looking forward to Dear Comrades and Apples.
