Usually I'm not blown away by his work or range. I feel like "Die Hard" and "Harry Potter" films convinced people that he's better than he actually was but still a very charismatic presence with some fine performances to his name. Enjoyed him in "An Awfully Big Adventure', "Sense and Sensibility" and "Closet Land". I appreciate that he tried to do comedy in "Galaxy Quest" and "Dogma" but he's hardly the MVP in any of those movies.

Can't comment fully now, but just wanna say his Best Supporting Actor BAFTA win for Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves is so fucking awesome.

Like him particularly his very "outside the box" performance in Truly, Madly, Deeply
He's maybe the most obvious UK example of a guy who could be seen as being far greater maybe even than his reputation (and he has a big reputation) if you just gave him better roles - that his talent actually outweighed his career.......
He was exactly between the great 60s UK actors (Hopkins, Finney, Caine etc) and the 80s class - DDL, Fiennes, Oldman.......and you could theoretically have seen him rivaling all the people like him in his particular UK age class - Irons, Pryce, Kingsley but no one would ever rank Rickman with them as far as I see it (maybe Pryce).......except the people he acted opposite..........co-stars always raved him.
Very much a singular figure among UK actors......and in how he's perceived - never Oscar nodded, but nodded 4 times for BAFTAs (with a win) in 6 years....that is unlikely to happen again I would think without an Oscar nod - and that doesn't include Die Hard even (!?!)

Yeah I suppose US loved seeing him as a villain only and that sort of limited the range he got to show to the mainstream... He made an unremarkable character in 'Love Actually' fairly memorable.

Oh, I really like him!! He was one of the best English actors in the 90s and 00s.
Some of his best work imo, just from the top of my head: Sense and Sensibility, Sweeney Todd, Robin Hood and Love Actually.
