The Bergmanian approach (i.e. intense close-ups of the actors' faces) was an odd but quite inspired choice, don't you think? (I know it really angered the film's costume designer, James Acheson. ) I love this quote from All Movie Guide: What do you think?

I would've been fine with it over the eventual winner that year, but he wouldn't make my Top 20 in what I find to be a deceptively strong year for Best Director.

Yeah, I'd say so. Even the actual winner (Barry Levinson for Rain Man) didn't neccesarily stand above him in any significant way. It was the kind of year where a lot of the acclaimed directing jobs and films felt evenly matched. Frears could have won the Oscar, and I don't think anybody would be saying "Barry Levinson got robbed".

Maybe but I'm not going to think twice about it when Cronenberg missed for his masterpiece in '88. I mean Frears over Mike Nichols maybe but the actor and director of the year were in Dead Ringers - a major studio release too (most subversive studio film........ever?) who were at joint tour de force level and compared to that field.....a whole different thing, even with Frears included.

I mean he's probably more deserving of a spot than the eventual winner was, but I wouldn't have him in my top 5... Maybe not even 10.

Yes, probably.
I could see him getting a spot instead of Nichols, Parker or Crichton. Not a very strong year for the category so he could have definitely been in.

I mean I don't see why not. It's a well-directed well-staged movie, and one of the other nominees that year was Charles Crichton an old-guard type who's similar to Frears in his British "kitchen sink approach", but Frears was a lot more modern, and thus more interesting as a result.
