Yeah, I think people are definitely sleeping on The Little Things for Score.

I dunno, I get that Newman can sneak in even for weaker stuff and that he's clearly beloved by the branch, but the big thing (lel) for me here is that they don't really nominate him for darker, brooding work. He does get in often but it's the sweeping stuff that pushes him forward. The score itself is not something this branch gravitates towards. But hey, if anyone can make a random appearance here, it sure is him. The Passengers nom showed that.
Btw, after watching Pinocchio I'm dropping it from Production Design and replacing it with The Father....it sounds totally wrong to have such a contemporary film here which missed ADG but dammit I simply don't know what else to do. I firmly believe in Ma Rainey not getting in, nor do I see stuff like Chicago 7 or The Midnight Sky make it...Monday sure's gonna be exciting.

Newman's an interesting case because he's gotten in without GG and BAFTA several times in the past, but most of them were for stronger films than The Little Things... and it's easy to forget that in 2016 Arrival was ineligible, so it seems pretty clear to me that Passengers took its place. The Good German is probably the weakest film he was able to get in for without GG and BAFTA, but that was also a much showier score dripping with the symphonic grandiosity of classic Hollywood.

I actually think Welcome to Chechnya might be a stealth contender for the VFX win. Well shit.
