DiCaprio's an obvious choice... but re-watching it last night, I was thinking this might possibly have been a perfect reunion for Fincher and Edward Norton.
You can recast Ruffalo while you're at it if interested... though I think he's pretty good here. Just not really believable as a guy that influenced Bullitt. Downey's perfect though.

I am a Gyllenhaal defender -- I think he's absolutely perfect at playing essentially this dweeb who gets so obsessed with a case that he's tangentially connected to, and it consumes him so thoroughly. I don't think anyone could've been better suited for that part.

I always felt Zodiac would've been a perfect reunion for Norton and Fincher with Norton in the Robert Graysmith role.

I don't think Gyllenhaal was bad here, he was just miscast.
Norton would've made an excellent substitution. I also think Ethan Hawke would've nailed this character.

I thought Gyllenhaal was fine, and better than Downey Jr. and Ruffalo. I don't think it's among his greatest performances, but I don't think he acquitted himself poorly at all. If I had to recast, maybe Gosling?

Gyllenhaal is an obvious weak link - he just comes off too young, too callow which of course is the point but .....it plays flat in the movie. Norton would be fine but when has he ever been special in a non-showy role anyway (since he's been great like 3 times ever to me I'm gonna say.....not much )......DiCaprio would be better I reckon. But that's a pretty straight role to me on the page - the movie is great but with a void at the center.....in some ways I'd cast someone weird like Sam Rockwell who is Norton's age and both a decade older than Gyllenhaal who actually was age appropriate....... just to give it more color though .......but that's a bit of a stretch to go that far off the real person to me.

Gyllenhaal was a flaw imo. First choices that come to mind are Adam Driver and Robert Pattinson.

I think Norton and McAvoy would be my top 2 choices. For the spirit of listing someone not listed, I think it would’ve been interesting to see Aaron Eckhart in the role. His characters usually exude pure confidence and quick-witted dialogue, but I think if he added a bit of a bungled element to those attributes it might’ve been pitch perfect. It would’ve been interesting to see him and RDJ play off each other.
And I like JakeG fwiw.

Casey Affleck and Chris Pine definitely could convey the nervous energy of Graysmith.
Now that I saw Allenism's Hawke mention, he could also be pretty damn rad in the role.

Thought he was perfect in the Zodiac role.
