Damn..they sure did..carving out a whole segment for it. I don't understand what they're saying but they sound excited..lol! LoL, but here is your French savior to translate it. Madame Huppert basically say that she was very surprised, she didn't expect it at all but it makes her very happy. She added that it's also a good surprise for the French and European cinema as well, it shows that American (critics) can be open and interested in a cinema that isn't their, it's very encouraging. It somewhat goes with the "Expand your horizons" quote of Dargis in this Q&A article you posted. Merci Monsieur!

Very happy for Huppert (you can tell she is over the moon at being the highest ranked actress) , and she (and Dargis) is right in a sense the broad internationalism and willingness to acknowledge actors who did not act primarily in the English language is a very positive aspect of the list.

Scrud, how would your list look like? Good question.lol! It took these guys 4 months to decide theirs, and to be honest, that's probably the kind of time I'd take to make a measured list of my own (well maybe a couple of weeks ). But obviously, I'd have the same guy at the top as the NYT.

Some of the media is obviously warming to the theme of Meryl Streep being "underrated" because she didn't make the NYT list (no she isn't ). The Independent just dropped an article ostensibly about her not being on the list maybe meaning she is becoming underrated (not sure if the writer actually believes their own premise, but hey, it's a headline that will get people reading). From the article:"In November, the New York Times declared its 25 greatest actors of the 21st Century, stocking its list with both inarguable greats (among them Denzel Washington & Isabelle Huppert) and lovely curveballs (Keanu Reeves at four!). Streep, however didn’t make an appearance. It sparked mild outrage, and at least among certain critics, a kind of relief"

That article was interesting...especially the bit about the theater critic Charles McNulty and his critic friends feeling bad for criticizing Streep. I don’t think she’s underrated (she has 21 Oscar nominations) but it seems like there’s a backlash towards her acting style with the acting props and tics she does..she can be theatrical. Which is interesting, because when people ask for the best performances Streep has given in the past 20 years, they’ll usually prefer something like Adaptation even over Devil Wears Prada or Doubt. Wonder if some of the backlash from some critics is because of the success she’s had and how prolific she is. Wonder if she took a work schedule more like DDL, would there not be a backlash towards her. DDL is more method obviously, but it seems like they pull from the same bag of tricks sometimes, accents, specific tics, different walking/body movements, can go theatrical sometimes, etc. Denzel doesn’t do it often, which is why some critics were surprised when he “transformed” himself for Roman J Israel, Esq.

Well, this is just clinically stupid. Regardless of how one feels about Meryl Streep, love her or loathe her, the one thing she can't be called is underrated.

Obviously you are right, but it just goes to show a lot of people in the media/industry really took this list to heart, if they are coming up with these hysterical hottakes. Like I said, I'm sure their were more than a few agents and publicists (not to mention some of the actors themselves) perplexed or bothered by the omission on this list of esteemed clients they represent. Whether one agrees with the list or not, it is obviously percieved as a pretty big deal to be on it.

Six pages for this shitty list...? Okay. It's on 8 pages on Awardsworthy. It's generated a lot of conversation, media and global interest. Two weeks on from publication, major newspapers are still writing thinkpieces about Streep not being on the list. It is what it is.

Six pages for this shitty list...? Okay. I said earlier they'll get it to ~ 20 ...... Why so sore? (Rhetorical question. We know why )This is actually one of the most discussed topics in the film world in recent weeks. And it's still being discussed in the media. Maybe this thread will actually merit getting to 20 pages. Nobody is forcing you to read or participate I'm sure you are working to get The Godfather Coda thread to a dozen pages all by your lonesome, except nobody is on that thread being a bitter betty whining why you won't stop posting every day on a thread about a re-edited version of a film few care for or intend to watch.

Or maybe you missed The Independent article (published today) about Streep being omitted from the list. If you no longer have interest in this topic, stay out of it. Problem solved. I know you hate the very existence of this thread, but y'all need to chill.

I don't think her acting style is neccesarily the core issue. When a body like AMPAS reflexively nominates Streep for having a fart, it means she becomes something of a sacred cow to many, and some people (or some critics) are simply resistant to that. I think even Dargis said they weren' t interested in doing a list of people with the most Oscar nominations. Streep is a great actress, but is she 14 nominations greater than Glenn Close? 16 nominations greater than Helen Mirren? 15 nominations greater than Julianne Moore? Probably not. Her rather absurd Oscar record, which no other actress in history is remotely close to makes her hard to judge/evaluate in a way. She is one of the greatest actresses around, but also no way as superior to several of her peers as her nomination record might suggest. In fact, there has long been in feeling in some circles that there are more than a few actresses as good or better than her, who simply don't get recognised as easily by the world's premiere film awards body. Even with all that said, there is no way she could possibly be underrated in the general sense at this point.

Crazy that Shannon Sharpe and Skip Bayliss are having actor GOAT debates, talking about Denzel, Day-Lewis and Brando in the middle of a sports show. So random!

Well I mean the Jordan-Lebron GOAT debate has been carrying talking head sports shows here in the U.S. for the past 4 or 5 years now, so they need something else badly..lol. I guess they're moving over to acting GOAT debates now..and it seems to be the same names again and again.

Very modest acknowledgement from Keanu Reeves in Vanity Fair of his inclusion in this list: www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2020/12/keanu-reeves-interviewKeanu Reeves Is Modest to a Fault Keanu Reeves has played many characters onscreen—goofball guitarist Ted Logan, computer-hacker Neo, dog-loving assassin John Wick—and your internet boyfriend in real life. But one role Reeves will not play is Man Comfortable Accepting Compliment. (Your internet boyfriend is modest too.) Late last month, The New York Times named Reeves one of the greatest actors of the 21st century. More precisely, he was listed as the fourth greatest, immediately following Daniel Day-Lewis and preceding Nicole Kidman. “Have you ever been disappointed when he showed up in a movie?” wrote critic-at-large A.O. Scott, resting his case. “Can you name one film that has not been improved by his presence?” Those kind words reached Reeves via his agent. I know this because, during a Zoom interview this week, I asked Reeves how he felt about the honor. “I hope people enjoy what I do,” the actor replied, bashfully. Reeves admitted that a few of his friends acknowledged him being on the list too, but in more of a “that’s cool,” head-nod kind of way. “If someone talks about my body of work or whatever and appreciates it,” he said, trailing off. He shrugged. “Nice is nice.” “That’s about as far as it goes,” he continued, signaling that he’d rather jump under a moving bus to diffuse a bomb, Speed-style, than continue discussing the subject “I just roll up my sleeves and go to work.”
