Had such a terrific time rewatching Training Day today (enough has been said about this performance but even with that in mind... god damn, Denzel) that I decided to treat myself to another Denzel movie right after it and revisited Crimson Tide... which is fucking awesome and needs to be talked about more! I mean, it's a complete and total masterclass in escalating tension - a rubber band that gets stretched and stretched for pretty much the entirety of the film with remarkable aplomb and chaotic elegance. If you're searching for a perfectly edited motion picture, look no further than this one. So many wonderful things to praise, including the fantastic Hans Zimmer score which I somewhat underrated when I first saw the film many years ago. It's kind of amazing to realize just how many other Zimmer scores sprung from his work here. And I think it's... one of Denzel's best performances? Even though it's not a character-based film (so there aren't many prolonged monologues and deep emotional dives) but a situation-based one, actors are still required to give it their all in order to convince us of the urgency and the stakes of the situation at hand, and man oh MAN does Denzel ever do that. His actions and, more importantly, his reactions are so completely lived-in, so real and so in-the-moment that you can't quite believe that they were performed by an actor on a movie set with script pages and equipment and lights and all that. It's as if someone placed a bunch of hidden cameras on a submarine during a crisis and just captured this person going through it all. I didn't see a character being acted when I observed Denzel here, I saw a character being lived. I don't think this particular turn gets mentioned too often when we're discussing Denzel but it absolutely should.

I don't think this particular turn gets mentioned too often when we're discussing Denzel but it absolutely should. Crimson Tide is a blast, and I think it's pretty widely acknowledged as one of Tony Scott's best films. It is one of Denzel's best performances, but when you are as consistently great as he is, there actually become too many performances to single out, so some don't get as much conversation as they might deserve ( His performance in Devil In A Blue Dress being another example of one of his best performances that doesn't neccesarily get as much discussion as many of his other best works. And often people tend to focus on the Oscar Nominated stuff and a few others) .Now that's an amazing "problem" to have....too many great performances, but there you go. I also think that Crimson Tide is seen more as an equally matched two-hander/ double act, with Denzel and Gene Hackman. I think they are both equally great in that movie (and it's one of Hackman's best performances as well). It doesn't quite get the same kudos as that other great two-hander face-off between 2 legendary actors released in 1995 ( Heat with Pacino and DeNiro), but I think it's every bit as good an acting face off, as that pair. Maybe better, because they are at odds the whole movie and the escalation of the breakdown of their Captain/XO relationship is an acting masterclass by the two men. Even great actors like Viggo Mortensen said he came to set on his day off, just to watch scenes between Washington and Hackman.

And yeah, Hackman is absolutely wonderful too. But like... I look at Denzel in that movie and I just don't see acting. He's being. As you can see, I'm kind of fascinated by how real that performance feels. Oh, and lol @ Virgo Mortensen He's a Libra!

Continued to fill my Denzel gaps by watching Virtuosity which is easily the schlockiest piece of his filmography I've encountered so far. He said that there're two films he regrets turning down - Michael Clayton and Se7en - and I sure hope he didn't pass on the latter for goddamn Virtuosity. He's fine in it but also sort of forgettable. Thankfully the movie's got Russell Crowe doing the "Eddie Redmayne in Jupiter Ascending" type of performance and he just goes all in on the ham. It's kind of glorious to watch him be this bonkers and uninhibited. He just runs away with the movie, and the damn thing needed it too.

Both actors admitted to hating the movie on the press tour for American Gangster (a movie which thankfully made up for their first team-up). If you want to see Denzel in much higher grade schlock, check out Ricochet, a bonkers, over-the-top thriller in which John Lithgow gives the kind of modulated OTT ham villiain that actually works ( unlike Crowe in Virtuosity, which was just a cartoon). And Denzel is pretty good in it.

You're getting obsessed again. Do you see anyone going in the Al Pacino thread crying about you and Mattsby jerking him off? No, because it's uncouth and classless. Speaking of Al, shouldn't you be on his thread covering the news today of him being fleeced by his 29 year old "girlfriend", who took the old man's sperm, kicked him to the curb and now just wants his money and child support payments before he kicks the bucket. You really got more important things to worry about than Denzel fans talking about him in his own thread .

Especially when I've got stuff like The Pelican Brief and Remember the Titans ready to go. Plus I'm very curious to check out The Magnificent Seven. Not sure how I missed that when it came out - it's James Horner's last score, it looks visually terrific and it's Denzel in a damn western! Sounds promising to me.

Let's be honest here, if American Gangster didn't have Denzel, and instead say, Sean Penn (if the character he was playing was white), you wouldn't give it a second thought beyond reducing it to an "inferior 70s Heat ripoff".

Ummm....no, since American Gangster is a very, very good movie, with the reviews to back it up. I feel like we've just had this encounter with The Manchurian Candidate. Whether you personally dislike them or not is your own business, but they are actually critically acclaimed movies, where it's not "suspicious" for anyone to think they are excellent films.. It's not Gangster Squad (which is your theoretical Sean Penn gangster movie that did recieve terrible reviews and legitimately is a piece of shit). Though I'm also one of the biggest fans on this board of another Sean Penn gangster film ( State Of Grace), Though mainly for Gary Oldman's work in it. Do you see me running around calling State Of Grace an inferior, Irish-American rip-off of Mean Streets? No, because it's an excellent film in it's own right, despite similarities to the Scorsese. So yeah. Hope that answers your question.

You don't need to sell me on American Gangster...loved it when I saw it in theaters and still remain a big fan even if, if we're capable of being objective (which frankly, I don't think you are where Denzel is concerned), it isn't in Heat's territory despite its pedigree. The biggest problem with American Gangster remains Denzel's characterization...not his performance mind you, but the character as it was written. The real Frank Lucas was a lot closer to Gooding Jr.'s performance of Nicky Barnes, a violent and illiterate thug. Barnes conducted himself more like Lucas' portrayal in the movie...a calculating businessman who read Shakespeare and wrote poetry. Well, we've always been in agreement on that. Though there's frustratingly little out there about State of Grace, an article I recently read opined it was a bit of a casting coup given Penn's track record of playing angry young men at the time. When they first met, Oldman broke out in song and dance to "Like a Virgin", to which Penn laughed. Interesting to think about them switching roles, even if it's hard to picture and I doubt the movie would have worked half as well. [/quote]

In case anyone doesn't know this story American Gangster is the movie that made the Zelstans hate me to begin with - because I saw it early at a critics screening (still friends with that critic - we saw Past Lives together too this year!) - and said it was good not great.........and wouldn't be nodded for BP and probably not actor either and the Zelstans lost their shit.........but I was right.........I'm always right (um, well almost) ....... That's when scrudpup lost his mind tbh - 2007/2008 - in 2008 I think he posted on like 500 or more websites with 500 or more screen names just about Denzel and it was craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazy stuff - like it was some scary shit.....and then he blacks out and forgets it........ and wants to be pals and stuff (see below) - goshthanksbutno February 27, 2017 at 12:06 : distain (pupdurcs) posted on Gold Derby:

Interesting to think about them switching roles, even if it's hard to picture and I doubt the movie would have worked half as well. Why would I need to be "objective" over my favorite actor ? I think he's a near flawless actor and the GOAT (as do many more "objective" folk), but I clearly don't love every single film he's ever made and have never had any problems saying so. John Q is shit (but one of his best performances), Virtuosity is shit, Heart Condition is shit. If I thought American Gangster or other films of his were shit or below par, I'd just say so. One of the reasons I'm a fan of the guy is because he generally raises the level and quality of the films he's in, so I'm going to like most of his stuff. It is what it is. As for the characterization of Frank Lucas...I see why they went with the more circumspect businessman route. The entire film was a very obvious metaphor for capitalism. So Steve Zaillian in his script and Denzel in his performance made Lucas a bit more sophisticated than he was in real life (ie an African American criminal had the savvy to have been CEO of a fortune 500 company if the opportunity was given). But it's a legitimate form of creative licence, and makes the "movie" version of Frank Lucas a far more iconic movie character than probably a 100% accurate version of the real Lucas would have been. People wouldn't have even been able to understand Lucas if Denzel went with his thick, country North Carolina accent. I don't think the Zaillian/Denzel version of Lucas comes off like he reads Shakespeare or writes poetry though . He just comes off less "country" than the real Lucas, but still comes off as a street guy who made it big. Look at Goodfellas. By all accounts, the real Henry Hill is a lot more of a sadsack/loser and pitiable figure than Ray Liotta's suave and cool performance of him made him seem. They made the "movie Henry Hill" a much cooler guy than the real one, and it made for a more iconic movie and character. It's a movie. Creative licence can be taken, even in films based on true stories.

Whoa...........whoa.........somebody said something less than fellating him in his own thread? On the plus side no one will call you a hater, a racist or get mad at you for reviewing Equalizer 3 "too soon" and what not I admire your bravery good sir!
Well, no fellating this time but I did use the phrase "fill my Denzel gaps" to keep the thread sexy so... However Mr. JangoB, the day you reach the absolutely insane numbers of 100+ messages (maybe closer to 200 if not more) where you consistently repeat like a madman (using all sorts of tricks and some of them are...well, if you know, you know) that "Denzel Washington is not that great, that he lacks this or that" like if your life depends on it, you may start to piss off some people and we may start to question your motivations and at this point even your mental health. But of course, this will never happens to you (or anyone else on here) because you are a sane person, it's actually something that you will never see anywhere else on serious films related forums, not at that level, not that deep, in 20 years of internet forums, I have never seen anything close to this, what this obssessed, deeply insecure...guy (to stay polite) has been doing on here for years is unreal, you have to see it to believe it. And I would find it insane, shocking and revolting just as much if it was about Shia LaBeouf let alone a highly respected, national treasure like Denzel. But of course it's because it's Denzel, he cannot stand the level of respect, admiration and popularity that Denzel has and that over the years, he has becomes for many people (in the industry, medias and real life) an easy, automatic answer as THE GOAT, sometimes overshadoing his "acting idols" and that the fans here are vocal about it, it burn him from the inside, it kills him. Which is of course a pathetic reaction because no one right in his mind would give a sh/t about it, you disagree, fine, say it twice and move to something else like any normal person would do/is doing. Instead of that, we got to witness that pure insanity that has been going for so long (on IMDB we had beef but at the end of the day it was all fine and actually interesting, he started to lose it on here). In themselves his criticisms are perfectly fine, no actor is above criticsms but with this...guy, it's not about opinions but attitudes, it's this obsessional, this absolute, visceral need to tell you (btw, you who ? the 50 regulars on here ? to himself ?...) that "Denzel Washington is not that great, that he lacks this or that" and you have to see all the "work" he's doing in this entire website to be able to do this sh/t, it's quite disturbing. There is so much to say but I won't waste more of my precious time and I would have to go more personal and I'm not here for it and I don't want you or anybody else to get involved in this craze (you clearly didn't asked for it haha), people here are extremely kind and I've long realised that they like to mind their own bussiness (even if they see everything...), you guys are not French

Denzel still one of the biggest stars in the world at nearly 70 years old. The Equalizer 3 is the number 1 movie at the worldwide box office, opening with 60.6 million dollars. That's a good news ! I was really curious to see its BO results, glad it's doing well. Let's just hope it doesn't trig them to do a fourth. I haven't done my duty yet, watching it next week.

I think Denzel is done with the franchise. He's got other challenges ahead of him, but Fuqua seems obsessed with continuing it (talking about de-aging Denzel for a prequel or casting John David Washington or Michael B Jordan as a young Robert McCall). Judging by reviews and audience scores, the franchise has ended on a high note. I want to see Denzel go on a run with different directors now.

I'll keep Ricochet in mind but I think I'll stay away from potentially schlocky Denzel movies for a while. Ricochet is solid

I can concur....Ricochet is a pretty ludicrous romp (your mileage may vary depending on your tolerance for wildly entertaining but implausible B-movies. Things like Tango And Cash or The Last Boy Scout) , but it's a ton of fun with Denzel and John Lithgow clearly having a blast. They understand the movie they are in and fully commit to it. Cool support from the likes of Ice-T as well.
