What are people's thoughts on this article? I don't agree wholly with it but the ubiquity of slow cinema when it comes to a lot of the more serious minded critics can be a tad grating to me. www.shaviro.com/Blog/?p=891i haven't seen much of this ubiquity firsthand really. i think slow cinema fans like myself tend to have our own likes (tarr, yang, akerman, dumont, reygadas, tarkovsky) and dislikes/not as fond of (zhangke, hsien, weerasethekul, liang, costa) just as any fan of any subgenre of films. do i think film critics should ease up a bit sometimes? eh i think most of them do already, and he's not citing critically maligned filmmakers or anything in his article to suggest otherwise.

I suppose ubiquity wasn't the best word but I think you'll agree that basically any time Weerasethekul, Hsien, or Zhangke releases something a lot of the top dogs like Slant, Reverse Shot, and Cinema Scope will immediately hail it one of the best films of all time. I don't mind some of their stuff though they've never once evoked any passion in me at all. I really need to check out Dumont and Reygadas. Thanks for the post though, I guess I usually just see so much overwhelming praise for every single director you listed that I become a little wary of it when I feel myself slogging through some of their work. All of the "likes" you mentioned I share aside from the two I said that I have yet to watch anything from. Have you seen Millennium Mambo? I'm not all that hot on Hsien but that movie has some pretty amazing things in it.
