A lot of people would agree that the best of Ghibli would easily beat the best of Pixar, and I was one of those people too thanks to films like 'Grave of the Fireflies' and more.
But then came 'Inside Out'.
I mean, Pixar has no shortage of deep stories in their films, but this was incredibly deep even by their standard. For those who saw my thread about 'Finding Dory' and 'Inside Out', you might remember that I said that 'Inside Out' is a rare film in which the event that the main character goes through is a metaphor of an 11-year-old girl's experience. In fact, the main character, Joy, and her friend, doesn't actually exist even in the film itself.
Nowadays, I'm still wondering if there's any Ghilbli film that can actually beat 'Inside Out'. Maybe there is...

Well, something like Grave of The Fireflies does deal with a much heavier theme, but Inside Out is indeed excellent. Coco looks like it could also explore some deep themes as well.

And it's directed by 'Toy Story 3' director, so that film could have more "bittersweet" ending.

Agree with this 100%. Anyway you look at Inside Out, it's a masterpiece.

Inside Out is pure formula. It's a buddy movie following Joy and Sadness doing lots of things that DO NOT AFFECT THE PLOT AT ALL. It's just a bunch of setpieces. The real story follows what is actually happening in Riley's life -- and that stuff is actually very good. But good heavens, everything else about that film was dreadful.

Pixar has made better movies than Spirited Away, but I think those are actually WALL•E and Ratatouille. Inside Out is a phenomenal movie, though. The best film of 2015, as far as I'm concerned.

Pixar's best are finding Nemo, Ratatouille, and Inside Out, all three being very sharp lively films. Ghibili is a studio for animated masterworks, that is for sure, but I think that those three Pixars can hold their own with the Ghibilis.

There are plenty of Ghibli films that better Inside Out, because there's plenty of Ghibli movies (and Pixar ones) that don't feel like some suit stuck their nose in, and rewrote the movies final act to turn it from being the interesting study of the death of innocence into some piece of crap cop out that after an entire movies suggesting otherwise makes out like it'll all be okay.
This movie was bordering on Bergman levels of deep, dark introspection to the point that it was one of the most thoroughly depressing movies to watch as an adult as was made that year, but they literally ruined the whole thing with that ending.

I'd consider Inside Out to be about on par with My Neighbor Totoro, which is my favorite Ghibli, but I'd say Toy Story and Toy Story 3 are better than either of them.
