The Master (greatest performance of last decade), but his performance in Her is an extremely close second. People don't talk enough about the soulful depths he achieves in that film.

I was looking at this at an angle and thought I saw mass voting on The Immigrant (rather than The Master) and was about to blow a gasket.

Gladiator, for me. Then Two Lovers or Walk the Line. Aside from the spectacular processing scene, I don't understand the passion for Joaquin in The Master. There's like 2 hours more of nothing. Buffalo Soldiers should be on this list too.

The Master or Gladiator. And as great as he is, he isn't even the MVP in any of these.

The Master or Gladiator. And as great as he is, he isn't even the MVP in any of these. You actually make a very good point. Those are arguably his top 2 performances, yet I do think Hoffman and Crowe were best in show. Phoenix is still great in those movies though.

The Master which is a top 5 performance of the decade........I'm a little mixed on You Were Never Really Here both as a performance and a film. I don't really "like" Lynne Ramsey to be honest though I admire some things in her work......and Phoenix is at least partially great there but I wasn't as impressed as some are with that one.
Most Underrated: I think Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far On Foot has something different from his usual turns.
Phoenix and PSH are to me the only 2 American actors since the "Big 4" of the 1970s (Nicholson/DePac/Dustin Hoffman) that can rival them .........in some ways at least - on a talent level I mean ....so seeing them in peak form in The Master is pretty thrilling for acting fans.
