Loving those raves for Boseman. He looks like he's got a legit shot at the Oscar.

Okay, actual reviews are coming out now and the main takeaway I'm getting is that Davis (so far) doesn't seem to be getting overshadowed by Boseman in the actual reviews, compared to some of the reaction tweets that were eager to call Chad a lock to win Best Actor (understandable I guess, as that is the more exciting narrative). For the most part, reviews seem to be raving Davis and Boseman equally for giving acting masterclasses and making the movie. Looks like it may be pretty hard to unseat Davis for Best Actress. Good luck Zendaya !

Definitely upping this to my prediction of the ten best picture nominees. Some of these reviews and reactions are best of the year worthy.

I love this time period and I'm so happy that they are showing the black perspective. We don't see that too often on film.

Pretty sure this needs to be added to the next Best Picture poll. Denzel coming for nod 10. Ah...I actually forgot about that . If he keeps this level up with his August Wilson adaptations, Denzel is going to rack up an extremely impressive number of Oscar nominations as a producer. So far he's 2/2 on these adaptations, and there are 8 more to go. What he is doing for Wilson's legacy is something quite remarkable. Because the movies are becoming so Oscar friendly and critically succesful and well seen, it's elevating Wilson to an already higher plateau as one of the undisputed greatest American playwrights in history. Similar to how Tennesse Williams run of succesful movie adaptations in the 1950's and 1960's helped elevate him beyond the confines of broadway, into an international figure. Wilson, with his Pulitzers and Tonys has always been up there in achievement and renown as a playwright, but his lack of the Hollywood treatment almost made him relatively obscure outside theatre nerd circles. Now that his work is recieving the overdue Hollywood treatment and making everyone fully aware of his work and importance, I think he's properly broken into the (formerly) trifecta of greatest American playwrights in Williams, Eugene O'Neill and Arthur Miller. Wilson makes it a quartet now. That is your Mt Rushmore of great American playwrights, in all probability (with apologies to Edward Albee, whose Who's Afraid Of Virgina Woolf has overshadowed everything else in his canon, and unfairly, can also be easily confused for Tennessee Williams play). The likes of David Mamet, Tony Kushner, Sam Shepard have made great reputations, but never quite enough to break into that pantheon. Neil Simon is the odd one out, who on paper is a Mt Rushmore contender, but in reality may have seen his impact diminish a lot since his heyday. In terms of accolades and achievements in his time, he easily stacks up to Williams, Wilson, O'Neil and Miller. His reputation has not grown like theirs over time though. Maybe he's fallen out of fashion, as his works do not seem to be revived with as much passion or consistency as the others. Perhaps also he is hurt by the perception that his best work is too "light" compared to the fury and tragedy seen in the best of Miller, O'Neill, Wilson and Williams. When your best known play is probably The Odd Couple, which a lot of people percieve as a lightweight sitcom, it creates a certain perception around your canon.

Da 5 Bloods Judah and the Black Messiah Mank Minari (The films distributor concerned me, though) News of The World Normanland One Night In Miami Soul The Father The Trial of The Chicago 7 Honestly, the only reason it wasn't in my top ten, was because I was waiting for reactions and reviews to properly sprinkle in first, Da 5 Bloods was basically my #10 prior (could still make it of course). I actually kinda had a pretty incomplete list because of it.

Discusses his history with the play, his imminent Death, briefly (sorta, that's a joke ), theater in general and the plays effect and Wilson's too:

Stephanie Zaracheck just dropped her review for Time, and I mostly agree with it, but specifically with her take on how spectacular Davis and Boseman's performances were. I don't know what the last movie was where the film won both the Best Actress and Best Actor Oscar (maybe As Good As It Gets with Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt?), but this one can certainly do it, and would deserve to do it to boot!
