Well this is my least favorite year out of any of the years I'm doing..... 1972-2009. I don't care for any of the classics this year so I'm left with very little. Only the Top 4 would make my Top 10 in ANY of the other years of the 80s. But #3 and #4 only in like the back-end. The rest are just sad. Maybe After Hours and Desert Hearts are better than my #10 of 1983 and 1987.... which is The Big Chill and Nuts, but I only see Angel's Egg and Commando as classics in this year.
And the acting lineups are not good at all. Supporting Actress is great and possibly best of the 80s, and the lead actor WIN is GOAT, but the rest just feels like a dry period.
Best Picture
1. Angel's Egg 2. Commando 3. Rambo: First Blood Part II 4. Kiss of the Spider Woman 5. After Hours 6. Desert Hearts 7. The Breakfast Club 8. Twice in a Lifetime 9. Clue 10. Fool for Love
Lead Actor
1. William Hurt – Kiss of the Spider Woman 2. Raul Julia – Kiss of the Spider Woman 3. Dustin Hoffman – Death of a Salesman 4. Robert Redford – Out of Africa 5. Gene Hackman – Twice in a Lifetime
Lead Actress
1. Whoopi Goldberg – The Color Purple 2. Kim Basinger – Fool for Love 3. Meryl Streep – Out of Africa 4. Sandrine Bonnaire – Vagabond 5. Jessica Lange – Sweet Dreams
Supporting Actor
1. Danny Glover – The Color Purple 2. John Malkovich – Death of a Salesman 3. Ed Harris – Sweet Dreams 4. Charles Dance – Plenty 5. Tim Curry - Clue
Supporting Actress
1. Ann-Margret – Twice in a Lifetime 2. Carlin Glynn – A Trip to Bountiful 3. Amy Madigan – Twice in a Lifetime 4. Eileen Brennan - Clue 5. Molly Ringwald – The Breakfast Club

Ian Holm, Dance with a Stranger Forgot about that one, what a subtle, souring perf, and what a great year Holm had. Dance, Wetherby, Brazil, and some I haven't seen, (another) Browning Version, Dreamchild....

Forgot about that one, what a subtle, souring perf, and what a great year Holm had. Dance, Wetherby, Brazil, and some I haven't seen, (another) Browning Version, Dreamchild.... He was so essential in Brazil and Dance (in perfs that are nothing alike). Jaffrey was my winner for a while but nothing really stuck out to me in this category until I saw that particular Holm performance. Subtle and souring indeed. A submissive pushover, passive until he reaches the boiling point and explodes. You can sense the tension bubbling and festering just underneath the whole time. Fascinating character. Have positive memories of him in Wetherby too, and I too still need to see Dreamchild. 1985 was definitely Holm's year.
