Ingrid Bergman vs. Katherine HepburnThe last time we did such a high ranking battle Hackman (#6 in the GOAT poll) defeated Nicholson (#5) which I still don't quite understand myself but that isn't the point - it's not about YOU pacinoyes - you are insufferable! .................... so now here's one similar for actresses I think: Two that maybe you would have thought might be reversed just going by awards for example but they were close and Bergman is right off the bat not nominated for the 2 roles I think of her first in (Casablanca, Notorious) she won 3 and had 7 nods.........Hepburn won 4 and had 12 nods. In our GOAT poll Bergman was 2nd, Hepburn was 5th. Hepburn who couldn't be more American, Bergman the foreign queen of her era. Both had long and glorious careers and remain iconic. So did we get this right in our poll - or should these two maybe have been reversed? Whose work holds up better?

One thing I have noted about Katharine Hepburn before is that she is an all time great at both comedy and drama and that puts her ahead of nearly everyone. Those screwball comedy performances are probably the most important and influential thing either of them ever did. In general I think her best dramatic performances (Lion in Winter, African Queen, Suddenly Last Summer) beat Bergman's as well so she wins on both fronts.

I'm in the middle of a Kate Hepburn marathon right now! And while I admired her before, now I find her astonishing. I mean, Long Day's Journey Into Night alone (watched it about a week ago)... titanic work and I don't think it's hyperbole to call it the greatest screen performance by an American actress. Sophie's Choice my arse. This is the real deal, a perf of poetic stature and crumbling inflexibility that contradicts all her signature strengths as an actress and as a personality, a full picture of denial and defeat. When people wonder if she deserved 4 Lead Oscars, well she kinda deserved 4 for this perf alone so yeah, absolutely. Bergman's one of the loveliest actresses, she'd be my winner twice (Gaslight, Autumn Sonata) and I enjoy her in everything. But still no match for Hepburn in star quality or (especially) talent.

Hepburn I think is in the pic for greatest comic actress that ever lived, but I think Bergman is a wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better dramatic player, and I kind of... Don't like Hepburn's dramatic work very much at all (Ew to the Goldman and the O'Neill). Edge to Bergman.

I love Kate, but Ingrid will always be favorite actress. I always find it baffling that Kate and Streep are always the defacto greatest actress of all time, but my vote will always be the queen herself, Ingrid Bergman.
