Two guys who are the sole living male Triple Crown winners from their countries - Irons from the UK and Plummer from Canada. Each with an Oscar, Plummer has 2 Tony's to Irons 1 but guys who worked all 3 mediums. Plummer has picked up 3 Oscar nods after 80, Irons has been under represented there - his Oscar win is for his one nod but Irons was for a time a much bigger film deal and maybe hit higher film peaks. Both can play seductive, intelligent, and charming..........and are classy. Plummer rarely goes as big and campy as Irons can but they are both masters of text and can handle long speeches among the best actors ever. Who do you prefer of the 2 dapper thespians - they still have it too - Plummer a recent Oscar nominee, Irons an Emmy nominee this year:

For my money, it's not even close. Plummer at his peak can be very good, but I think Irons is just better in every conceivable way.

Plummer, by miles.
I know I'm alone with this take, but I find Irons exceedingly mediocre. The most overrated actor that you never hear anything bad about. It's not even close to me. Plummer is the ultimate scene-stealer and one of my favorites - just with an underwhelming Oscar win, but great in just about every other major movie. (And I've seen him in some stuff no one else has seen) Irons looks the part and feels like a good actor, but for some reason he always fell flat to me. Kind of a monotone actor with a smooth, silky voice but that's it. Way too easy to find him boring, imo. Reminds me of James McAvoy, to an extent.
0 nods/0 wins.... Yeah

Both great actors but I clearly prefer Irons.

One bump for this one, would love to hear more takes too. Plummer's Prospero, Irons' James Tyrone on stage .......

Surprised Irons is winning but I agree. Plummer has a deeper filmography and a better career but Irons is more talented and has better highs. Plummer is just a lot more notable due to being co-lead The Sound of Music and getting supporting roles in big movies for decades. Reversal of Fortune was an instant classic but aside from that Irons has never really been a "star" just a highly regarded actor. Which is why I expected Plummer to be winning regardless of what I think.
