I saw this for the second time after many, many years.
Irons is magnificent in the dual roles, especially as Beverly. He's never been the most loose/relaxed actor, and I wouldn't exactly describe this portrayal of mental illness/decline as "realistic", but nevertheless it's very hard-hitting performance (or set of performances, rather) that really brings home the brutalness of the story's conclusion. The screenplay itself feels oddly opaque at times, but it sort of works with Cronenberg's smooth yet detached directing style.
My only real reservation is the casting of the Bujold. She's not weak per se, but I just had a hard time buying why Beverly would form such an obssession with her. She's also too old(-looking) to be playing a woman still trying to have children. To me this feels like a role that should've been filled by someone like Barbara Hershey.

Masterpiece - 1988's best English language (and just behind Dekalog, Spoorloos etc.). You recently posted on Don't Look Now and Dead Ringers is actually a more fully realized version of some of the same themes - fatalism, a prognostication on impending death but played out in real time without any of the horror/paranormal trappings of DLN. It also uses red to the same effect but better ........the color of blood (family blood and in general here), passion/lust, madness. There is so much red in Dead Ringers it has to set some kind of record - it floods the screen. I kind of love Bujold who is also meant to evoke the twins mother - she represents both safety for Bev and the Oedipal complex and poses questions LITERALLY like a mother might (even asking about their literal mother "Isn't that a girls name?") and the movie has many thematic digressions around her (including how she is a fully formed person who cannot "become" two while they are two who can never function as a "one")....this movie has got to be the darkest subject matter film (ever?) released by a major studio or one of them at least which teases a relatively happy ending before hanging up the phone, turning its back on that entirely! . Besides an amazing lead performance -just outside my modern "top 6 English language" male performances which includes DePac, Brando, DDL ........an engrossing/no BS complex screenplay......... it also has a chill inducing, eerily used score too. So much red.....

For my money, Cronenberg's best film. As brilliant as he is with body horror, I think he works best when he deals with mental/internal horror, and Dead Ringers exemplifies that. Irons gives an all-timer of a performance (or, rather, performances) and his snub is unconscionable, and I definitely agree with him that his victory two years later for Reversal of Fortune was largely a makeup prize for this. I do think Bujold is very strong as well (and I don't mean to argue, but I definitely can't see Barbara Hershey being a fit for that part), but it's the Irons show, and it's one I constantly return to.
