Who are actors/actresses that you you link for whatever reason either in their acting styles, generation, types of roles ..........or in the amount of acclaim/awards or even their career arcs? It can be anything really - just ones you link together........ This came up because of Amy Adams/Bradley Cooper in my irl movie club being linked not just through American Hustle but also lots of nods, no wins, arguably "overnodded" some might say.....same age..... DeNiro/Streep (or Nicholson/Streep?) Pacino/Huppert (maybe Mirren instead?) DDL/Blanchett Duvall or Bridges/Spacek Lemmon/Bancroft maybe (?) Denzel Washington/Kidman Michelle Williams/Gosling (or DiCap/Joaq?)
Who are some others for you or challenge/change the ones above? Curious to hear what we come up with and ones for Hopkins, Lange, Hackman, Close, Newman, Fonda, Redgrave, Smith, Oldman, Hanks, Dafoe, Olivier, Brando, Rowlands, Page, Burstyn, Sarandon and some other quirkier names besides these usual suspects.Explanations encouraged!

Denzel Washington / Frances McDormand - Both highly acclaimed actors with 2 Oscars to their names, only a couple of years apart in age and of the same generation, come from theater backgrounds and each has won a Tony Award and aren't afraid to keep returning to the stage. Both in real life seem to not suffer fools and seem to have a "blue collar" approach to acting/celebrity where they feel they just come and do their jobs. True professionals. Excellent at conveying truth in their performances. Will be very interesting to see how their chemistry is acting together in The Tragedy of MacBeth. Could be amazing or not. I'm willing to bet the former.
Jack Nicholson / Meryl Streep - Currently the most Oscar nominated actor/actress in history and cinema legends. Different acting styles and Nicholson is much more of a movie-star type but two of the most highly acclaimed actors ever.
Daniel-Day Lewis / Cate Blanchett - Both immersive and technical performers that are beloved by AMPAS. Blanchett is more prolific than DDL and thus may be running out of "faces" as the famous Brando quote talks about. Sought out for the best Hollywood prestige scripts currently in the industry because of the acting cache they bring.
Jeff Bridges / Sissy Spacek - Both have a low-key, rural presence about them and how they perform, especially Bridges recently. Alot of Oscar nominations between them and same generation. Would actually like to see a movie between them, since I'm not sure if they've ever acted together before.
Leonardo DiCaprio / Kate Winslet - Can't think of two modern actors so tied together. Done two movies together, one being one of the biggest box-office films ever in Titantic. Both highly respected with AMPAS and both have won Oscars. Kind of grew up together in a way, both real-life friends who support each other and are of the same generation. DiCaprio is the much bigger movie star but other than that, they seem like the equivalents.
Morgan Freeman / Judy Dench - GRAVITAS! Same generation
Sean Penn / Julianne Moore - Both actors who have several Oscar nominations between them, were highly respected by AMPAS at different points in their careers, both are respected by their peers and both have hammed it up from time-to-time. Same generation
Tom Hanks / Julia Roberts - Both loved by America, especially during the 90s. One was "America's Sweetheart" and Hanks was the "American Everyman" or "America's Son" especially after Forrest Gump. Two of the biggest movie stars of the past 40 years and each had box-office successes. Done two movies together, Charlie Wilson's War and the other one that escapes me at the moment. Not of the same generation, but both have made their mark in cinema.

Same generation Good one and I almost listed this but then I thought Penn in a lot of ways is maybe closer to Jessica Lange ......though not same generation there.......a lot of actors seem to me to fit with 2 or even more like this.

Had a real good talk on this irl with some friends who suggested Gene Hackman's equivalent is Ellen Burstyn - ie overshadwed in their generation maybe (Hackman by the Big 4 of the 70s, Burstyn by those who emerged just after her) - both nominated about the same (5 Hackman, 6 Burstyn) both could do support or leads.........co-stars in Twice in A Lifetime (1985) ......rarely showy, almost always dependable. Both emerged at around the same age, a little older than usual........

I've always found Cary Grant very similar to Audrey Hepburn.
They both were very enjoyable in comedic roles (esp. in the genre of screwball comedies, in which they became very famous) but also they had the acting quality to deliver memorable dramatic performances.
Plus, they were arguably the biggest movie stars of their time and their screen presence was riveting no matter the role.

My first comparison for Streep would be Pacino, just because of the depth of excellent performances and longevity. They're both still relevant, Jack's been retired for a while and was working sporadically in the 2000's.
Michelle Williams is more analogous to Phoenix or Gosling, she's not a big enough mainstream star to be DiCaprio.
Agree on DiCaprio/Winslet, especially up to a certain point before Winslet dropped off. In the 2000's she was the closest thing to an actress equivalent to Leo. Hanks and Julia Roberts is another one that makes sense.
I might add Christian Bale and Natalie Portman, a comparison I heard on IMDB one time so I can't take credit for it. Both were viewed as extremely promising child/adolescent actors, landed big franchise roles to become known to a larger audience, and won Oscars in fairly dominant sweeps in the same year. I think in 2010 people would have expected them both to be bigger stars than what they are now. They deliberately shied away from the spotlight and appear to have quirkier indie/arthouse taste in roles, not mainstream Oscar-bait.

Deniro and Babs
In cultural impact both had annoying extremist fans.- And both right now are doing stupid commedies, both medicore directors, despite the fact they made (De Niro) or at least try (babs) to make great perfomance in great films.-

Great idea for a thread.
In an intangible way, I think Robert De Niro and Meryl Streep were counterparts to each other for a long time. Falling in Love was the opposite-sex version of the pairing of titans that Heat has come to be known as, except it didn't quite deliver to that extent. But the marketing for that movie was all about the best actor and the best actress coming together for a two-hander in a way that was always meant to be.
Maybe it's because I remember their sex scene from Body of Evidence a little too well, but Willem Dafoe and Julianne Moore feel like good equivalents for a variety of reasons.
I've drawn this comparison before, but Will Smith and Angelina Jolie have several commonalities, both in terms of their star appeal (though Smith is a sizably bigger star) and perhaps their sensibilities.
Long-time friends Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman are another. Their career trajectories are dissimilar, but they feel like equivalents in terms of overall esteem. Crowe may have enjoyed the otherworldly peak where he was the undisputed King of Prestige Hollywood for a short time, but Kidman has had the more sustained career. In totality, however, you'd have to say they were both a similar caliber of star that have had a similar level of acclaim.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet would have been a no-brainer in the 2000s, but with Winslet falling off this decade and DiCaprio ascending to the Hollywood throne, I am starting to wonder a little if Lawrence will go on to prove a better match for him. Different generations and Lawrence has a long way to go to match DiCaprio's longevity, but DiCaprio and Lawrence are perhaps the first and only actor and actress to be both the biggest stars and the most acclaimed actors of their respective generations.
Timothee Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan have been compared to DiCaprio and Winslet by Greta Gerwig, something that they themselves may kind of identify with. I think it's a little early to be saying they're equivalents of each other with their careers still so young, but they do seem to occupy a similar space in the collective consciousness of the movie community.

I don't know where @tyler is (he's been MIA) but would be really curious who he sees as a male version of Glenn Close .........I can think of a few that are somewhat like her but not perfect matches.....maybe Anthony Hopkins fits (?) - can rival her across all 3 mediums, close comparisons in Oscar Nods also, can appear as the only person of their country in large multinational casts.............filmed a lot of plays.......well known to everyone but not really a big box office draw.....

My first thought was Jeremy Irons, and I really can't seem to get past it. Iconic Disney villains (Scar, Cruella), sterling theater backgrounds, fluidity between film and television throughout their careers...
